According to Orlando, in economic espionage, billions of dollars have been lost. “China is attacking private sectors with cutting edge technology.” There was then a series of questions about apps like TikTok, and products such as Ancestry and 23andMe. The father of two teenagers, Orlando understands the issues surrounding TikTok. “My concern is two-fold,” he said. “China wants to control the narrative and engage in censorship. That app allows them to do that, and we don’t want the Chinese government dictating content here. China is also a leader in facial recognition, and now they’re capturing this data using TikTok.” In regards to products like 23andMe, Orlando said when you send DNA sequencing to China, they learn a lot about your health and family. “They could use this data to potentially target or recruit you.” However, Orlando offered some hope about the future, what we are doing right, and what we should continue doing. “One of the best things is that we are actually talking about this problem, because for the longest time we couldn’t,” he said. “If we continue to make good investments and collaborate with other countries, we’ll be in a better position. But we have to think about what that means long term and how to achieve it.” n
