Why are our expectations of social media so high?
For one thing, there are too many stories of a guy with three followers who posted a single internet-busting video of his cat that somehow went viral. Suddenly, he’s a sensation and quits his job to rake in millions on TikTok! That could be us, right? Well, not likely. Besides being astronomically improbable, stories like this are probably not completely true. The other problem is who we follow. Most of us keep up with at least a few social media “influencers” with thousands of followers, who make posting look as effortless as their six-layer made-from-scratch rainbow cake (that we’ll inevitably bookmark but never get around to baking).
