Grange Co-op’s GrangeGives volunteer team partnered with Jacob Fry Construction and G&B Organics to create raised garden beds. The garden consists of 6 large boxes, perfect for varieties of flowers, fruits, vegetables, and berries. GrangeGives volunteers began constructing raised beds in early spring to prepare for the planting season. The boxes utilize G&B Organic Soil and Fertilizers, as well as a variety of blueberry plants. The boxes were also made utilizing drip systems for ease of watering. Gardening at an early age helps develop motor, perceptual, language and communication skills. Grange Co-op recognizes the importance these skills bring to the development of youth, and through their GrangeGives initiative, are enabling access for children to experience gardening in their communities. “It’s important for our youth to know where their food comes from and how it’s grown; this garden is a perfect way for these kids to learn at an early age,” says Demetria Marical, Youth and Community Outreach Coordinator for Grange Co-op. “The food they grow will be used in their kitchen for everyone to eat. It’s a perfect opportunity to learn the complete cycle of a garden, start to finish.” Grange Co-op will continue fulfilling its purpose of helping its customers, communities and employees achieve more together with the help of its GrangeGives volunteer team.
