FEBRUARY BIRTHDAYS REMIND US OF ICONS OF FREEDOM

What do Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Susan B. Anthony, and Rosa Parks all have in common? Besides unwavering courage, they were all born in February! To make this month even more impactful, we celebrate President’s Day and Black History Month. So, while we may all be stuck in a Valentine’s Day frenzy, we should also remember the people who shaped our freedoms today. For all the tireless work each of these people accomplished, doesn’t it seem weird to think of them only in one month? Lincoln’s

honesty, Washington’s boldness, Anthony’s determination, and Parks’ courage should be celebrated all year! Because of them, we can all enjoy our freedom to vote, speak freely, and live with pride. When looking at President’s Day and Black History Month, countless heroes fought for freedom, which cost some of them their lives. I like to consider their commonalities and think, what strings them together? Bravery, compassion, patience, intelligence, or perseverance? Of course, it was a combination of these traits, and I like to think we all have a bit of these in us, too. While they may seem like far-off heroes of bygone days, they were average people like us who made a difference for future generations. We can, too! So, while you may be stressing out over Valentine’s Day dinner reservations, last-minute shopping, or finding the best box of chocolates, take a second to remember what matters most. Of course, I care about Valentine’s Day, but I also know just how easy it is to get caught up in these holidays. Without historical figures like Lincoln, Washington, Anthony, Parks, and so many more, we probably wouldn’t even celebrate Valentine’s Day! Let’s not forget the profound impact February has had on shaping the course of history. The icons born in this month exemplify courage that transcends time. It doesn’t seem coincidental that Thomas Edison, Charles Darwin, and Galileo

For all the tireless work each of these people accomplished, doesn’t it seem weird to think of them only in one month?

Galilei were also born in February. I’m sure the list goes on and on with all the notable people who have impacted society as we know it today. These figures, whose legacies echo through the ages, deserve recognition beyond a single month. As we navigate the whirlwind of Valentine’s Day preparations, let’s pause to reflect on how these seemingly distant heroes, who were ordinary people, made an extraordinary impact. I hope we can also ask ourselves, “What can we do today that positively impacts our tomorrow?” So, amid the hustle of romantic gestures, let’s also celebrate the enduring legacy of those who made Valentine’s Day celebrations possible. –Darin Garman

THE BRAVERY OF TANK THE GERMAN SHEPHERD A Heroic Hound’s Story

In a remarkable display of courage and instinct, a German shepherd named Tank recently became an overnight sensation. His heroic act, captured in a TikTok video with over 45 million views, showcased the extraordinary bravery of our canine companions. Tank’s story begins on an ordinary day that quickly turned extraordinary when he saved his owner’s 6-year-old son from a dog attack in November 2022. As the young boy played in the front yard of his South Florida home, a neighboring dog, unrestrained and aggressive, charged toward him. In an instant, Tank leaped into action. The dog pushed the boy to the ground and then placed himself between the boy and the oncoming threat, averting a possible tragedy. Tank’s quick thinking and fearless stance saved him and demonstrated the innate protective nature of German shepherds.

protectiveness, making them the first choice for families seeking a dependable guardian. Like many German shepherds, Tank possesses a unique blend of courage, intelligence, and loyalty. These dogs are not just pets; they are devoted protectors and family members willing to put themselves in harm’s way for their loved ones. Tank’s story is more than a viral sensation; it’s a testament to the deep bond between dogs and humans. His actions remind us of dogs’ invaluable role in our lives, offering unconditional love and unwavering protection when needed. The boy’s mom wrote on social media that Tank is their “highly skilled professional home security officer.” “This is Tank & no, he is not professionally trained. He’s just a man with killer instincts, who loves a good chew toy,” she wrote after posting a video of Tank playing with his favorite toy.

In today’s world, Tank stands out as a true hero. As we watch Tank’s story, we are reminded of the extraordinary capabilities of our four-legged friends and their profound impact on our lives. It’s a reminder that sometimes, heroes don’t wear capes; they have four paws and a tail.

Telling You What You Don’t Want to Hear in 2024

WHY HONESTY IS ALWAYS THE BEST POLICY

Most people tell you what you want to hear because they care what you think about them. I tell people what they DON’T want to hear because I don’t place value on what they think about me. Of course, I don’t speak in a way to purposely anger or offend people. The key for me is that as long as I’m telling them something true, I don’t need to worry much about what they may think of me. A case in point is investing in multi-family communities. Investing in or owning, passively or actively, an apartment community is NOT for everybody — maybe it’s not for you either. Most, if not all, other real estate “gurus” will tell you how EASY it is and how UNBELIEVABLE your returns and income will be. According to a recent email from one of the “gurus,” you can “TRIPLE your investment. “ They show you all their “toys” of success, testimonials promising “easy results,” and so on. In other words, they are telling you what you want to hear. These folks care about what you think of them, probably hoping you will buy or invest. Now, I have discussed how well projects and communities will do and the benefits of owning your multi-family community. But I have also turned investors away, even at the risk of offending some, because multi- family investing and ownership did not fit them well. This type of honest communication is how it should be.

So, after you read this, take 30 seconds to think about two things:

1. Will multi-family investing be a good idea for you? Do you see the financial benefits of having your own (passive or active) apartment community or community? 2. What does everyone ELSE tell you about owning, investing in, and being involved in multi-family investments (or any other “business opportunity,” for that matter)? Are they simply telling you what you want to hear? Whether it is good news or bad news, telling you what you NEED to hear is what I am all about. As should anyone that you choose to follow or get advice from. Unless ...

You like being told what you want to hear.

Have a great Valentine’s month!

Iowa’s Ci Stardom

When you think of Hollywood glamour, you probably think of Los Angeles, California, not Iowa. The truth is that Iowa has quietly played host to several blockbuster movies, adding its own unique charm to the silver screen. Grab your popcorn, and let’s explore some famous movies that found their home in the heartland. We have to start with the 1989 classic “Field of Dreams.” If you build it, they will come, and that’s precisely what happened when Kevin Costner brought this heartwarming tale to life in Dyersville. The iconic baseball diamond carved out of an Iowa cornfield became a symbol of dreams, family, and the enduring magic of the game. In the romance genre, the town of Winterset became the backdrop for the 1995 film “The Bridges of Madison County. Starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood, this film turned the county’s rustic covered bridges into symbols of love and longing, attracting visitors from far and wide to experience the romance that can blossom in the heartland. Fast forward to 2010, when Cedar Rapids took center stage in “Twelve Thirty.” It’s not the most cheerful film, but the city’s landscape provided a backdrop for this independent film featuring Broadway star Jonathan Groff. You’ll even see the landfill Mount Trashmore in the background! If you’re a fan of quirky comedies, you’ve probably seen “Cedar Rapids” (2011). This film starred Ed Helms and took a pretty hilarious look at the life of an insurance salesman attending a convention in — you guessed it — Cedar Rapids. The movie captures the city’s charm and the unexpected adventures one can find in the most unassuming places. You’ll see some great B-roll footage, sweeping establishing shots, and flyovers of the city. Finally, an honorable mention goes to the 1962 musical icon, “The Music Man.” The film’s River City was based on Mason City, home to the playwright Meredith Wilson. Though the film was shot on a set in California, it still showcases the infectious joy of small-town life and the power of music to bring people together. Next time you find yourself lost in the magic of movies, remember that Iowa’s cornfields, towns, and cities have had their moment in that spotlight, bringing heartland magic to the world of cinema.

Discovering Europe’s Overlooked Beauties

EXPLORING EUROPE’S HIDDEN GEMS

RHODES, GREECE One of the most southern islands of Greece, Rhodes is home to fascinating history and picturesque beaches. The Old Town is a one-of- a-kind blend of Hellenic Greece and the knights and castles of the Middle Ages. To make sure you don’t miss any of the stunning beach views, you can hire a skipper from Mandraki Port to take you around the entire island. Europe’s lesser-known sites offer a unique blend of charm, history, and culture. Each place, with its own distinct personality, tells a story that enriches the tapestry of European heritage. So, the next time you plan a European adventure, consider veering off the beaten path to explore one of these hidden wonders.

Europe, with its rich tapestry of cultures, history, and landscapes, offers many different experiences for travelers. From the cobblestone streets of quaint villages to the bustling avenues of cities, the continent beckons with a blend of the old and new. Places like London, Paris, and Berlin are all hugely popular, but these four hidden gems deserve recognition despite being often overshadowed by their more famous counterparts. GHENT, BELGIUM This medieval city is a treasure trove of history, with its well-preserved architecture and charming canals. The Gravensteen Castle, a stone sentinel standing since the Middle Ages, offers a glimpse into Ghent’s storied past. Art lovers can appreciate the Adoration of the

Mystic Lamb, an iconic piece of religious art housed in St. Bavo’s Cathedral.

PORTO, PORTUGAL Known for its port wine and stunning Douro River views, Porto captivates with its colorful buildings and intricate azulejos (ceramic tiles). The Livraria Lello bookstore, with its spiraling staircase and ornate woodwork, seems straight out of a fairy tale and is a must-visit for bibliophiles. LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA This small but vibrant city is a blend of Baroque and Art Nouveau styles with a touch of modernity. The Ljubljana Castle, perched on a hilltop, offers panoramic views of the city, and Tivoli Park is a green oasis perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic.
