HOW PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP MANAGE OSTEOPOROSIS

HOW OSTEOPOROSIS AFFECTS YOUR SPINE Most people who develop osteoporosis don’t know they have it until they suffer a complication. The disease itself is painless and has limited symptoms, particularly in the early stages. However, just because you don’t feel osteoporosis doesn’t mean it isn’t there. As your bone mass decreases, your bones become more brittle and prone to breaks, especially in the spine. In fact, many people learn they have osteoporosis when they suffer a spinal compression fracture, particularly in the mid to lower back and upper back. Osteoporosis can also begin to impact your posture over time. Some people get shorter or develop kyphosis (the medical term for a hunchback). These changes in the spine are caused by compression fractures brought on by weakened bones.

Have you recently suffered a bone fracture–only to learn you also have osteoporosis? You likely have questions and concerns about the condition. Fortunately, Reddy Care Physical, Occupational, & Aquatic Therapy offers plenty of hands-on treatment solutions! Osteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs when bones stop producing enough mineral density, causing bone mass to decrease and the structure and strength of the bones to change. It’s a common condition, particularly among older people, affecting around 13% of adults aged 50 or older in the United States. Certain factors can increase your risk of developing the condition. Gender is among the most significant–women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than men. Having a small frame, being underweight, and not getting enough physical activity (especially weight-bearing exercises) are additional risk factors. While osteoporosis has no cure, physical therapy can help you manage the condition and the risks that come along with it, including weakened backbones and an increased likelihood of fractures. You can thrive even with an osteoporosis diagnosis through therapeutic exercise, postural corrections, and more.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT PHYSICAL THERAPY

One of the best things you can do to manage osteoporosis and reduce your risk of fractures is to perform land-based exercise. Bone is living tissue that you can strengthen just as you can a muscle: with dedicated strength training. However, you need to consider your decreased bone mass, as typical strength-training exercises may be too intense for someone with osteoporosis. Our physical therapists will work with you to develop a customized exercise program to strengthen your bones without increasing your risk of injury. We typically utilize two types of exercise in our program: • Weight-bearing exercises such as dancing, walking, or racquet sports (like pickleball) • Resistance training exercises using free weights, exercise bands, or body weight (such as squats or lunges) Our therapists will show you how to properly perform any prescribed exercises, especially resistance training. It’s important that you maintain good spinal alignment when lifting weights, as you’re at a higher risk of injury than someone with denser bone mass. We can also help address additional symptoms through balance training, postural corrections, or specialized exercises designed to reduce kyphosis. If you’re at a high risk of falling (and thus suffering a bone fracture), we can work through dedicated fall prevention programs to ensure you stay active and mobile without fear. In order to further help with fall prevention, our Great Neck clinic offers the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill. This treadmill reduces the impact of your body weight by up to 80%. It provides much-needed relief that most other treatments simply are not able to do. All of this adds up to a much safer,

quicker, and more comfortable recovery than you may experience without it.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR APPOINTMENTS Our therapists will work closely with you to understand your experience with osteoporosis, such as back pain, postural issues, or recent fractures. We’ll take a complete health history and conduct various movement screens to measure your balance, strength, mobility, and more. This information allows us to develop a customized treatment program. During your sessions, we’ll guide you through your treatment plan. We’ll make sure you’re performing all exercises correctly and measure your progress, offering modifications as needed–including increasing the difficulty as you improve! LET US HELP MANAGE YOUR OSTEOPOROSIS! Developing osteoporosis doesn’t mean you can’t live a full, healthy life. Our physical therapists will provide the tools you need to effectively manage your condition and keep fractures and back issues at bay.

Are you looking for tips on how to make your home safer? Did you know there are simple steps you can take to make your home safer and reduce your risk of falling? At Reddy Care Physical, Occupational, & Aquatic Therapy, our physical therapists will guide you through activities and tips to make your home safer so you can reduce your risk of falling! Falls are a significant concern for seniors, and even without an injury, a fall can cause a loss in confidence and reduction in activities and even contribute to future falls. It is estimated that six of every ten falls happen in or around the home. Too often, we overlook simple changes because we are used to moving around without thinking about our safety. There are a lot of changes you can make to your home that will help ensure your safety, the most critical include: • Make sure your house is tidy: Clean up books, papers, clothes, and shoes on the floor or stairs. Too often, a minor obstacle leads to a trip and fall. • Remove throw rugs or small area rugs: Make sure your carpets are fixed firmly to the floor so that they won’t slip. Put no-slip strips on tile and wooden floors. • Make sure there is good lighting: Proper lighting and easy-to-find light switches at the top and bottom of stairs and on each end of a long hall can ensure your safety. REDUCING FALL RISKS YOUR GUIDE TO A SAFER HOME

• Have handrails on stairs and in bathrooms: More importantly, use them! Hold the handrails when you use the stairs, up or down, and when you get in and out of the tub/shower. Once you have considered the environment of your home, make sure you also address the individual living there, you! The safety of your home also depends on you making good decisions. For example, do not climb up on a chair to clean something high, and be careful on wet surfaces, whether bathing or cleaning. Inactivity affects your safety and may lead to more complications from a fall or injury. Fortunately, a proactive approach will reduce the risk of falling and keep you safe around your home!
