HOW PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP MANAGE OSTEOPOROSIS
HOW OSTEOPOROSIS AFFECTS YOUR SPINE Most people who develop osteoporosis don’t know they have it until they suffer a complication. The disease itself is painless and has limited symptoms, particularly in the early stages. However, just because you don’t feel osteoporosis doesn’t mean it isn’t there. As your bone mass decreases, your bones become more brittle and prone to breaks, especially in the spine. In fact, many people learn they have osteoporosis when they suffer a spinal compression fracture, particularly in the mid to lower back and upper back. Osteoporosis can also begin to impact your posture over time. Some people get shorter or develop kyphosis (the medical term for a hunchback). These changes in the spine are caused by compression fractures brought on by weakened bones.
Have you recently suffered a bone fracture–only to learn you also have osteoporosis? You likely have questions and concerns about the condition. Fortunately, Reddy Care Physical, Occupational, & Aquatic Therapy offers plenty of hands-on treatment solutions! Osteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs when bones stop producing enough mineral density, causing bone mass to decrease and the structure and strength of the bones to change. It’s a common condition, particularly among older people, affecting around 13% of adults aged 50 or older in the United States. Certain factors can increase your risk of developing the condition. Gender is among the most significant–women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than men. Having a small frame, being underweight, and not getting enough physical activity (especially weight-bearing exercises) are additional risk factors. While osteoporosis has no cure, physical therapy can help you manage the condition and the risks that come along with it, including weakened backbones and an increased likelihood of fractures. You can thrive even with an osteoporosis diagnosis through therapeutic exercise, postural corrections, and more.
