WHAT TO EXPECT AT PHYSICAL THERAPY
One of the best things you can do to manage osteoporosis and reduce your risk of fractures is to perform land-based exercise. Bone is living tissue that you can strengthen just as you can a muscle: with dedicated strength training. However, you need to consider your decreased bone mass, as typical strength-training exercises may be too intense for someone with osteoporosis. Our physical therapists will work with you to develop a customized exercise program to strengthen your bones without increasing your risk of injury. We typically utilize two types of exercise in our program: • Weight-bearing exercises such as dancing, walking, or racquet sports (like pickleball) • Resistance training exercises using free weights, exercise bands, or body weight (such as squats or lunges) Our therapists will show you how to properly perform any prescribed exercises, especially resistance training. It’s important that you maintain good spinal alignment when lifting weights, as you’re at a higher risk of injury than someone with denser bone mass. We can also help address additional symptoms through balance training, postural corrections, or specialized exercises designed to reduce kyphosis. If you’re at a high risk of falling (and thus suffering a bone fracture), we can work through dedicated fall prevention programs to ensure you stay active and mobile without fear. In order to further help with fall prevention, our Great Neck clinic offers the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill. This treadmill reduces the impact of your body weight by up to 80%. It provides much-needed relief that most other treatments simply are not able to do. All of this adds up to a much safer,
quicker, and more comfortable recovery than you may experience without it.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR APPOINTMENTS Our therapists will work closely with you to understand your experience with osteoporosis, such as back pain, postural issues, or recent fractures. We’ll take a complete health history and conduct various movement screens to measure your balance, strength, mobility, and more. This information allows us to develop a customized treatment program. During your sessions, we’ll guide you through your treatment plan. We’ll make sure you’re performing all exercises correctly and measure your progress, offering modifications as needed–including increasing the difficulty as you improve! LET US HELP MANAGE YOUR OSTEOPOROSIS! Developing osteoporosis doesn’t mean you can’t live a full, healthy life. Our physical therapists will provide the tools you need to effectively manage your condition and keep fractures and back issues at bay.
