ACCOMPLISH You’ve said yes, your t-shirts have been ordered, your funds have been donated in full — it’s almost GO time! There are a few things we need to accomplish together before sending you on your way, including managing your travel reservation, informing you of immunizations you may be interested in getting, viewing our Camp Life Prep video, or signing up for a zoom meeting with your mission account manager. TRAVEL We know that traveling almost 8,000 miles across the globe is no small feat. At Family Legacy, we take pride in getting you from point A to point B with ease. Please refer below for a review of our travel process. STEP 1: CONFIRM YOUR TRAVEL INFORMATION This step should be a review for most of you, as all Camp Life flights should be confirmed and purchased by now. As a reminder, if your Camp Life flights were purchased after January 31st, you may be subject to additional flight charges due to increases in flight costs.* • Travel dates | Including sponsorship event and/or side trip dates. Many of you have chosen to enhance your Camp Life experience by adding on a sponsorship event or a side trip. These details should be well underway by now! For your side trip, we hope that you have chosen to work with SafariScapes, Family Legacy’s preferred travel agency. We are working closely with SafariScapes to ensure every detail of your trip is planned out perfectly. If you have chosen to work with a different travel partner, please be sure to let us know the details of your itinerary once it’s finalized so that we can book your international flights, help you arrange your airport transportation, etc. If you need any assistance finalizing the details for your add-on trip, please reach out to your Missions Account Manager. • Departure and arrival city • Any other travel preferences | Extended layovers in Dubai, business class, etc. • Review your passport details STEP 2: MANAGING YOUR FLIGHTS Once your travel dates and preferences are confirmed, we can proceed to the next step: booking your flights. Most of you have booked your flights and received your final travel documents allowing you to view and manage your flights on the Emirates website. Your final travel documents are also available on your Trip Dashboard under Resources. Your Camp Life international flights are booked using the passport name you provided when applying for Camp Life. Please visit your trip dashboard to ensure the name listed on your application matches the name on your passport. If you need to make a change to your passport name, please reach out to your Mission Account Manager. *Please note: if there are any errors or changes needed to the name on your flight itinerary, you will be financially responsible for those changes.

5

Please refer below for steps to review your flights on the Emirates website:

1. Visit Emirates.com and select “Manage Your Booking” 2. Use the airline reservation code listed on your final travel documents and your last name to view your flights 3. Please verify that the spelling of your name on the Emirates reservation matches your passport* 4. Please verify that your dates, class of service, and departure cities are exactly what you requested

5. Select seat and meal preferences 6. Sign up for check-in reminders

*Keep in mind that you will be responsible for confirming that the passport details on your Emirates reservation are accurate

**If you are traveling with a minor: Emirates will not provide minors with a Dubai connect hotel room—they must room with an adult traveling with them. STEP 3: PASSPORT INFORMATION For those of you with an extended layover in Dubai, Emirates will provide you with a hotel room during your stay. In order to receive a hotel room during your layover, Family Legacy will need to provide Emirates with your Passport ID and Expiration. If you have not already, please confirm your passport details with your Mission Account Manager. Please be aware that if you do not complete this step, you will not have accommodations for your stay in Dubai.**

IMMUNIZATIONS

At this time, the CDC and WHO do not require any immunizations for travel to Zambia. However, it is recommended that travelers consider travel vaccinations such as COVID-19, Hepatitis A, B and Typhoid, as well as staying up-to-date on routine vaccinations (e.g. Chickenpox, polio, ect.). Medication for Malaria is also recommended in Zambia, especially for those adding on a side trip vacation to their Camp Life experience. For more information about immunizations, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc.gov/travel. We recommend that you refer to your primary physician for medical advice related to your upcoming travel. The guidance you receive from your doctor will be specific to you and your overall health, such as other medications and personal preferences.

TEAM MEETING

You will receive a Team Meeting video via email this year at the end of March. The team meeting video is critical in preparing you for Camp Life as we will be going over things like key travel information, packing list tips, spiritual preparation, and programming. Keep an eye out for more details on how to watch!

OPTIONAL VIRTUAL CALLS

Our goal as your Short-Term Missions team is to ensure you feel prepared and fully equipped for your Camp Life trip. To achieve this goal, we are now offering personal virtual calls with your Mission Account Manager for all new Camp Life participants or any alumni with additional questions or concerns. These calls will be an opportunity for you to ask questions regarding Camp Life tasks, travel, packing, or your time in Zambia. If you want to schedule a Camp Life virtual call, please reach out to your Mission Account Manager.

LEARN This section of the packet is designed with our first-timers in mind. We hope that the information provided will make you feel at ease about traveling to Zambia and fill in answers to some questions you may have. ZAMBIA

Located in Sub-Saharan Africa, Zambia is a gorgeous country that provides travelers with a glimpse at beautiful wilderness and wildlife and is home to one of the World’s Seven Natural Wonders, Victoria Falls. Zambia is also a landlocked nation that has experienced the devastation of HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty. The impact of this has resulted in a population largely comprised of children. With a population of almost 21.70 million people, 42% of Zambia’s population is age 14 or under. At Family Legacy, we seek to serve the most vulnerable of these children through inviting them to experience the hope of Christ and providing a transformative education.

CLIMATE

The weather in Zambia during June and July is dry with little to no rain, 70–75 degree temperatures, and bright and sunny with occasional cloud coverage. Temperatures in the mornings and evenings can be in the 50s, so sweatshirts, light jackets, or long sleeves are advised. Though temperatures are pleasantly cool, the sun is intense (Lusaka is over 4,000 feet above sea level), so sunscreen and hats are highly recommended.

TIME DIFFERENCE

Zambia is 7 hours ahead of U.S. Central Standard time during our summer. At 2:00 p.m. CST, it is 9:00 p.m. in Zambia.

LANGUAGE

While English is the official language in Zambia, the children in your Camp Life group will speak Nyanja. They may understand some English, but you will have two Zambian partners who speak both English and Nyanja and will help translate and facilitate conversations.

8

FOOD & DRINK Nourishing and hydrating your body during your time in Zambia will be a high priority for staying healthy and energized. This trip is not the time to count your calories, so make sure you are well fed and are drinking plenty of water. During your week of camp, we will provide you with a few staples for breakfast and lunch as well as a fully prepared dinner. Refer below for a brief overview of what to expect. BREAKFAST: We provide milk, juice, eggs, butter, and bread. You will need to bring any other items you want for breakfast such as cereal or oatmeal. Each villa’s upper room has a full kitchen available including an oven, microwave, and standard coffee maker. Please note that we no longer have Keurigs. LUNCH: Family Legacy will ask you to bring a few of the items necessary for this meal, see page 17. DINNER: Dinner is provided at the Summit each night by the Legacy Lodge. Dinners typically include meat, vegetables, and starch, but a salad bar is always available. SNACKS: Please bring any snacks that you might want to Zambia. We recommend things like bars, nuts, or jerky. While at camp, you are welcome to enjoy your snacks, but we ask that you do so discreetly and not in front of your group of kids.

DIETARY RESTRICTIONS On your Camp Life 2025 application, you were asked to list any health or medical concerns that Family Legacy should be aware of, including any allergies or dietary restrictions. We pass this information along to our kitchen staff who will prepare your dinner accordingly. If you are unsure if you noted any dietary restrictions or allergies on your application, please contact your Missions Account Manager to confirm or update your information. For breakfast and lunch, we recommend that you bring additional breakfast items and sandwich making alternatives as needed, such as almond butter or gluten-free bread. WATER The water at Legacy Lodge and the Legacy Center is safe to drink. We have installed high-quality water filters that meet the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO). We do provide water dispensers and ask that all participants bring a reusable water bottle that can be refilled throughout the day.

THE GARDEN CAFE Coffee drinks, breakfast tacos, and sweet treats will be available before and after Camp Life each day at our Garden Cafe. Prices will range between $3–$4 for each item.

HEALTH CONCERNS

Lusaka has a relatively low risk for travel related infections in general, especially within Family Legacy’s accommodations. However, considering COVID-19 and traveling overseas, we encourage you to prepare prior to your travel to minimize the chances of getting sick while in Zambia. Refer below for a few health concerns to keep in mind as you prepare for your trip. DEHYDRATION | During the day, you will spend a lot of time outside in the sun at 4,000 feet above sea level. We suggest you drink plenty of water and bring Gatorade, Propel, or other hydration supplements. ASTHMA | Since it is dry season in Zambia, the dust can aggravate those with an extreme asthmatic condition. Therefore, we recommend that you bring allergy medication and/or an inhaler with you. ALLERGIES | If you have a peanut allergy, please be aware that peanut butter will be used in your villa to make sandwiches daily. We recommend that you closely monitor where you prepare your food and bring the appropriate medication/an epi pen if necessary. COVID-19 | Zambia has officially lifted all COVID-19 related restrictions for entry into the country. Neither vaccinated nor non-vaccinated travelers will need to present a COVID-19 test in order to travel to Lusaka. We encourage you to check the travel requirements for Zambia on the Emirates website frequently as you approach your Camp Life week.

EMERGENCY HEALTH CONCERNS

During your time at Camp Life, rest assured that your health needs are our number one priority and will be handled appropriately. Family Legacy’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Brad Guffey, has four board certifications and specializes in Infectious Diseases. He will be available to assess medical needs of participants if they should arise. In addition to Dr. Guffey, other qualified medical professionals and facilities are available in Lusaka.

EMERGENCY CONTACT NUMBER

In the event that someone from home needs to notify you of an emergency, please provide them with our U.S. office phone number: 972-620-2020. Our stateside staff can get you connected to a staff member in Zambia urgently.

10

EVANGECUBE While at Camp you will have the opportunity to share the gospel with the children in your group using an Evangecube, which will be given to you when you arrive in Zambia. An Evangecube is a seven-panel cube that tells the story of Christ in pictures. We will go over how to use the Evangecube many times when you arrive at Camp however, if you would like to begin practicing or praying over the verses you will use to share the gospel while in Zambia, we have provided the pictures and verses for each of the seven sides of the Evangecube for you to review below.

The picture of Heaven on the right represents that God is perfect, but we are separated from God because of our sin. This is bad news...but there is good news coming! “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)

God loved us so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for us to pay for our sin. We can’t get rid of our sin on our own, so Jesus did it for us! “But God demonstrated His own love for us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Jesus was put in a tomb after He died. Do you think that grave could hold Him? “...Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, He was buried, and He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

11

The grave didn’t hold Him! Jesus rose from the dead, defeating the power of death! “Death has been swallowed up in victory! Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:54-55)

We need to believe that Jesus is the only One who can take away our sin, and we need to ask Him to do it. We need to repent of our sin (turn from it), make Jesus the Lord (Leader) of our life, and follow Him! “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him might not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16) Jesus is the only way for our sin to be removed. He is the only one who can give us a relationship with our loving Heavenly Father. There is no other way to Heaven. “I [Jesus] am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)

ADDITIONAL READING MATERIALS To prepare for your trip to Zambia, you will receive a series of devotionals from Danny Lightner, our Advisor for Spiritual Development, via email. However, for those of you seeking additional materials to prepare your hearts and minds, our team has curated a list of books we think are great tools. These materials are not required and not recommended for younger participants, as some may contain more adult concepts. WHEN HELPING HURTS: At Family Legacy, we seek to glorify God by empowering vulnerable children in Zambia to live up to their God-given potential, but we want to accomplish that mission in a way that truly helps. In this book, Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert explore how some poverty alleviation efforts fail to see poverty as a complex issue and can cause more harm than good. When Helping Hurts explores Christ-centered poverty alleviation that applies biblical principals to caring wisely and compassionately without unintentionally causing harm.

THE HOLE IN OUR GOSPEL: Is our faith just about going to church, studying the Bible, and avoiding the most serious sins, or does God expect more? Have we embraced the whole gospel or a gospel with a hole in it? This book is the compelling true story of a corporate CEO (Richard Stearns, World Vision) who set aside worldly success for something far more significant and discovered the full power of the gospel of Jesus Christ to change his own life. He uses his journey to demonstrate how the gospel—the whole gospel—was always meant to be a world-changing social revolution; a revolution that begins with us.

amazon.com/Hole-Our-Gospel-Expect-Changed/dp/0849947006

WALKING THE BOWL: A breathtaking, real-life story of four street children in contemporary Zambia whose lives are drawn together and forever altered by the mysterious murder of a fellow street child. These children navigate the violent and poverty-stricken underworld of Lusaka, one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities. Gripping and fast-paced, the book exposes the perilous aspects of street life through the eyes of the children who survive, endure, and dream there. Warning: this book contains depictions of violence and abuse that may be hard for some readers. However, we believe it realistically depicts life for street children in Zambia.

“Over the last decade, we have heard so many stories of God’s faithfulness through Family Legacy and the life change that occurred in families, that we knew we had to do Camp Life at some point. As our kids grew in age and maturity into their teen and pre-teen years, we felt like it was time to sign up. We are so grateful we did! Our Camp Life experience was incredible and will stay with us forever. Like every “mission” or “service” trip, we think we’re going over there to teach these kids, but in fact we are the ones that learn the most! The Lord taught our family so much during our week in Lusaka, but these are the big three lessons that stand out: 1) The contrast between the Zambians’ lack of health, shelter, food, and clothing and their abundant joy challenged all of us what a Christ-like joy and peace looks like (especially relative to our flawed Western view of pursuing joy through worldly possessions). Whatever challenges we walked into Camp with, we quickly forgot about them through added perspective of what real difficulties look like and that perspective hasn’t faded over time. We needed our hearts to break for what breaks the Lord’s. 2) Our kids walked away from Camp Life realizing that consistent with 1 Tim 4:12, they can do ministry today. They don’t need to wait until they are older to ask the Lord how He wants to use them. They can share the gospel, meet needs, and care for others irrespective of their age. In all three of our kids, not only did they step up at Camp Life, but we have seen them continue to lead after returning home, seeking opportunities to be God’s hand and feet in their schools, sports teams, etc. 3) The way the Zambian culture takes care of each other and meets each other’s needs is awe inspiring. It was incredible to see how the older kids serve the younger kids and how nobody is a stranger. We walked away realizing we have much to learn in watching how Zambians love others with an “It Takes a Village” mentality as scripture calls us to in Phil 2:3-4. The Family Legacy staff set the table perfectly for an amazing ministry week and our high expectations from friends’ stories were indeed surpassed. Unequivocally, your family needs to go on this trip! The trip is life changing and was one of our family’s most Kingdom influencing experiences to gain perspective, grow closer to the Lord, meet new friends, and do ministry together as a family.”

- Craig Wenning | 2024 Camp Life Participant

“It was a leap of faith, deciding to take our family across the world and serve children in Lusaka, a city I’d never heard of until Family Legacy! I was concerned about details of the long travel and our effectiveness in serving with a language barrier. God answered all those prayers. What a phenomenal week for our family! Every day we showed up and the Lord faithfully led us. It was amazing to work side by side with my family, to see my husband love on little children like they were our own, and to see our own kids step up and serve in such great capacity. The goal was clear that each child be taught the gospel of Jesus Christ and be shown his love all week. Family Legacy is so intentional. The week at Camp Life gave us the opportunity to learn about all the facets of the ministry in Lusaka. They engaged participants of all ages from sun up to sun down each day in a way that allowed each of us to interact and educate ourselves on the four pillars of the ministry: spiritual, physical, and emotional health as well as education. Every day we were given opportunities to learn, grow and deepen our relationship with the Lord and one another. We loved working with fellow ambassadors from all over the United States and gained so much from the Family Legacy staff and summer staff. Our Zambian partners were each uniquely gifted, and we formed sweet relationships with them. Lastly, the children were amazing and taught each of us true joy rooted in Jesus. The impact of Family Legacy is life giving and life changing for both Zambians and families serving.”

Monday through Friday are official Camp Life days, and you will see the children in your Camp group each day. Below is a quick overview of what you can expect each day. Each night at camp we will provide you with a detailed schedule for the next day. Keep in mind that things can change while you are there, so always pay attention to updates about the schedule and instructions for each day.

SATURDAY SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY

20

YOUR SMALL GROUP

You can expect 8 to 10 students in your Camp Life group. Students attending camp will consist of alumni-connected kids as well as unsponsored and sponsored students. Throughout the week, you will enjoy time with the children in your group in big group sessions, small group time, and individually. Big group session allows groups to gather together for singing and dancing as well as learning more about this year’s Camp Life theme. Small group sessions will let you expand upon the big group sessions with your individual groups.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

You will have one-on-one time with each child, referred to as a Blessing Time, which will give you an opportunity to get to know them better and pray with them.

We will equip you with a list of sample questions to help you with these special and important conversations. We encourage you to build deeper relationships with the children you meet, but it is important to keep in mind the challenging life experiences these children have already had. Many of these children have experienced varying forms of abuse or neglect that have affected their understanding of appropriate relationships, so please be mindful of this as you interact with them.

ZAMBIAN PARTNERS

We equip you with two Zambian partners who will serve alongside you the whole week. These partners will help you communicate with the children during small group sessions and Blessing Time. You will have the opportunity to spend some time with them on Sunday before your week of camp begins as well as each afternoon after your children leave. Your two Zambian partners will play an integral role in your overall experience, as you will be sharing very special and transformative moments together. To show your appreciation, we ask that you bring stationary to write each of your partners a heartfelt letter at the end of the week. Please refrain from giving any additional gifts or money to your partners, as this creates tension and jealousy among our partners.

21

SHARING CONTACT INFORMATION

Please do not give your personal contact information (such as email addresses, phone numbers, Facebook, etc.) to any of the children. While you may have wonderful intentions in reaching out to a child or his/her family directly, it is best for the ministry and the child if you communicate through Family Legacy. You can do this through our child sponsorship program, which will allow you to provide for a child’s basic educational and spiritual needs and communicate with him or her through letters. Feel free to share your contact information with your Zambian partners at your discretion. We understand that you may be interested in maintaining your relationship with them but encourage you to cultivate healthy boundaries to avoid inappropriate or unmet expectations.

DON’T MAKE PROMISES

We know that after building relationships with the children in your group, you may be tempted to promise them that you will return to Zambia next year or secure their sponsorship (if unsponsored). While we understand that you may fully plan on following through with your intentions, we ask you to refrain from making any type of promises to these children.

Many of them have found so few people to trust in their short lives, and failure to fulfill any promises can be very hurtful, so be sensitive to the power of your words.

GO In this section, we will review

What is my allowance for cabin baggage? ECONOMY CLASS Economy Class customers are permitted one (1) piece of carry-on baggage that should not exceed 22 x 15 x 8 inches (55 x 38 x 20 cm) and must weigh no more than 7 kg (15 lb)

important travel information such as travel logistics, baggage allowance, and arriving in Zambia. CHECKING IN We recommend checking in online for your flight 48 hours in advance and arriving at the airport around two hours prior to departure. When you get to the airport, you will be able to use the Online Check In line, which tends to move faster than the regular line. The ticket agent will give you your boarding passes and baggage tags. Please hold on to your baggage tags until you arrive in Lusaka as you will need them to collect your luggage. Those of you with an extended layover in Dubai will also receive your hotel and meal vouchers. Please carefully store your hotel and meal vouchers as you will need them during your layover in Dubai. CHECKED BAGGAGE If your flights were purchased by Family Legacy, your ticket will most likely be classified under the humanitarian travel policy with Emirates. DUBAI

LANDING AND OVERNIGHTING IN DUBAI

For those flying round-trip on Emirates, the airline will provide you with a hotel for any non-voluntary layovers over 8 hours. If Family Legacy did not book your travel arrangements, you will be responsible for securing and confirming your hotel reservation. When you land in Dubai, you will make your way to the Emirates hotel desk where you will turn in your vouchers and be transported to the hotel you will stay at during your layover. The following instructions will help you locate the Emirates hotel desk:

■ Once you disembark from the plane, follow the signs to “Baggage Re-Claim”. This will take you to the ground level of the airport via escalators or elevators. ■ When you reach the ground level of the airport, you will immediately be required to go through “Passport Control”. Please note, you are not required to purchase a Visa or bring any additional documentation with you when in Dubai. ■ After you are through “Passport Control,” you will continue walking straight and pass through the baggage re-claim area. After you have passed all the baggage carousels, you will go through the “Nothing to Declare” line of the customs check point. ■ After going through Customs, go through the main doors that are straight ahead and then turn left. As you walk, you will see on your left a row of hotel options and shuttle services. Walk past the Hotel/Shuttle options until you are in the final lobby area before exiting the airport. ■ In the far corner, by the outside doors, you will first see an “Emirates Information Desk”. Just past this desk (and somewhat hidden behind the information desk) is another booth that has a red sign with “Emirates Hotel Desk”. Once you arrive here, simply give your vouchers to the workers, and they will provide instructions regarding which hotel you will be staying at as well as riding the shuttle. ■ Emirates business class travelers should turn right as you exit customs. You will immediately see the entrance for Emirates business and first class customers. Give your hotel vouchers to the attendants at the desk and you will immediately be directed to a waiting vehicle to be transported to your hotel.

ARRIVING IN ZAMBIA

Once you land in Zambia, you will go through immigration and obtain your Visa. For those of you participating in the standard week of Camp Life, your visa will be free of charge as Zambia is no longer requiring any form of payment to obtain a single-entry visitors visa. For those of you also participating in a side trip, please make sure to check with your side trip agency to confirm the cost of your Visa.

TIPS

• Use the free luggage carts to collect your luggage.

• If asked by the immigration officer where you are staying during your time in Zambia, you can provide “Legacy Lodge” or “Meanwood Ibex Hill”.

• Exit the arrivals hall on the far right side that says “Nothing to Declare”.

• Make sure you have your luggage tags readily available, as the airport agents will compare your luggage receipts to the tags on your bags.

MISSING LUGGAGE

If you are missing a piece of luggage, you will need to go to the Lost Luggage counter to file a claim. It is necessary for you to give an accurate description of the luggage (style, color, brand).

TRAVELING HOME

Saying “goodbye” to the children and country you love can be emotional. We hope that you are forever impacted by your experience at Camp Life!

We encourage you to use your long trip home to reflect on your time in Zambia. Use your time on the plane to remind yourself of the Camp Life theme “Be Strong & Courageous” and document experiences and information about each individual child. As a reminder, there are likely going to be children in your group that are not currently sponsored and/or are not receiving an education. It is our hope that through Camp Life, the un-sponsored children will have an opportunity at sponsorship and an education, perhaps for the first time in their young lives.

We ask that, as their Camp Life ambassador, you would consider how the Lord would have you play a part in securing a sponsorship for them.

Family Legacy will be providing you with resources to help you secure sponsorships throughout this process, during your trip, as well as when you return home.
