History of Memorial Day and Ways to Celebrate: Memorial Day is way more than just a day off work. In the United States, it is a day for all of us to appreciate the freedoms we have for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. It is also the unofficial kick-off to summer. Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military. Memorial Day 2022 will occur on Monday, May 30. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings where they like to do barbeque together and also by participating in parades. Unofficially, it also marks the beginning of the summer season. Why do we Barbeque on Memorial Day? The change was meant to give federal workers day off and create a long weekend, presumably to use the extra time in acts of memorial. However, many view the creation of the three-day weekend as the end of what Memorial Day was supposed to be about and the beginning of its decline into of barbeque. On that note, Memorial Day barbeques might feel more normal this year compared to the last two years due to the pandemic era. Dealing with raw meat can be tricky, and cooking it improperly can be deadly. When grilling meat, there are multiple steps you can take to avoid getting food poisoning and enjoy your Memorial Day Barbeque with family and friends. Babeque can be done with chicken, pork, shrimp, beef, vegetables, hamburgers – the list is endless though as Barbeque seems to be the quintessential food for any outdoor activity especially on this day. Here are some safety tips for the grilling on Memorial Day: -Practice cleanliness -Do not reuse marinades that have been used with raw meat -For kabobs, keep meat and vegetables separate -Do not use the same plates and utensils but use a fresh one each time, if possible -The weather outdoors being so hot and most people grilling then, the cold dishes that are served like salads and desserts should not stay outside for more than two hours. So this year on Memorial Day, just relax and spend time with your family and appreciate everything and everyone that got you to this point.
