ufacturing (+4,700), chemical manufacturing (+4,100) and food manufacturing (+3,400). But job gains have been rel- atively flat over the past eight months. “Manufacturers are reporting positive order growth. In April, new orders for manufactured goods rose 0.7 percent, marking a three-month growth streak. Orders for durable goods rose 0.6 percent, while nondurable goods orders grew 0.8 percent. Unfilled orders increased 0.2 percent, marking the 45th consecutive month of growth, following a 0.3 percent rise in March. “Manufacturing construction is also on the rise. Despite a slight dip in overall construction spending in April, manu- facturing construction rose 0.9 percent and is up 17.3 per- cent year-over-year. The value of manufacturing construc- tion this year is 28.2 percent higher than last year. “But manufacturing sentiment is mixed. The U.S. Man- ufacturing PMI contracted for the second consecutive month to 48.7 percent in May, while the S&P Global U.S. Manufacturing PMI showed a modest improvement to 51.3 percent, driven by increased new orders and rising busi- ness confidence. “This follows an expansion in March, which ended a 16-month contraction streak. Two out of five subindexes contributing to the PMI are now in expansion, up from one in April. “In May, the New Orders Index fell deeper into contrac- tion, slipping from 49.1 percent to 45.4 percent. This marks the second consecutive month of contraction and the low- est reading since May 2023. The report continued, “The Production Index de- creased to 50.2 percent from 51.3 percent in April, but re- mained in expansion territory, marking its fourth expansion in the past five months. Among the six largest manufactur- ing sectors, only fabricated metal products and chemical products reported increased production. The Employment Index rose to 51.1 percent, indicating an expansion in em- ployment after seven months of contraction. “The Prices Index fell to 57 percent from 60.9 percent in April, showing a rise in raw material prices for the fifth consecutive month. Five major manufacturing industries reported price increases. Despite strong expansion, the index showed some easing. Prices for commodities like fuel, natural gas, aluminum, and plastics continued to rise, while steel prices weakened. In May, 26 percent of compa- nies reported higher prices, down from 31 percent in April. “Inflation pressures on manufacturers remain. Manu- facturers continue to face rising input prices, prompting some firms to increase their selling prices, though the rate of output price inflation appears to be slowing. “Rate cuts in Europe last week probably won’t be re- peated in the U.S. this week. The European Central Bank cut interest rates for the first time in almost five years. The Federal Open Market Committee meets this week, and while a rate cut is unlikely, news from across the pond will likely factor into the conversations in the boardroom.”
