INCLUDES WORLD PREMIERE RECORDINGS

Key features: • This release follows on from our premiere pairing of the Suítes Sinfônicas Nos. 1 & 2 (Naxos 8.573925) ‘expertly brought to life by the Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra, which under conductor Neil Thomson is both energetic and disciplined’ ( BBC Music Magazine ). • One of barely a handful of further recordings of his work is the inclusion of the Three Pieces for Violin and Piano on our Images of Brazil album (Naxos 8.573923), considered a recording that ‘showcases the breadth and variety of Brazilian music by focusing on composers who use native forms, such as the bossa nova, chôro, frevo, and samba, combined with neo- Romanticism, Modernism and jazz’ ( WFMT Chicago ), and ‘the most delightful disc of Brazilian chamber music to come along in years’ ( Fanfare ). • With its world premiere recordings of both the First Symphony and the Nonet , this is yet another Naxos album that shows us what we have been missing through neglect of South American composers and César Guerra-Peixe in particular, with even the modernist serial style of these earlier works filled with the kind of life- enhancing directness of expression that infuses all of his music. César GUERRA-PEIXE (1914–1993) Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 ‘Brasília’ Nonet Goiânia Symphony Choir • Goiás Youth Symphony Choir Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra • Neil Thomson César Guerra-Peixe’s compact First Symphony and the colourful Nonet date from his years as part of the Música Viva group – a collective of young composers influenced by Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, the German composer and teacher who brought serial techniques to Brazil. Guerra-Peixe’s relationship with serial composition was intense and short-lived, but both of these earlier pieces were admired internationally and remain two of the finest works produced by this movement. From the 1950s onwards, Guerra-Peixe turned to musical nationalism with many successes including his award-winning and eloquently programmatic Second Symphony .

Mieczysław WEINBERG (1919–1996) Complete Music for Cello and Orchestra Nikolay Shugaev, Cello Tyumen Philharmonic Orchestra Yuri Medianik Mieczysław Weinberg flourished as a composer despite working amidst political and personal setbacks. He gained the admiration of Shostakovich, and was championed by the leading Soviet musicians of the day. The soulful Cello Concertino with its Yiddish overtones and melodic eloquence was discovered posthumously, and is effectively a preliminary version of the more elaborate and intense Cello Concerto . The potent Romantic nature of the Concerto has made this one of Weinberg’s most performed largescale pieces. The Fantasia is an appealing early work – expressive and spontaneous. The orchestral piece Polish Melodies, Op. 47, No. 2 recorded during the sessions for this album is available to download and stream (Naxos 9.70381).

Key features: •

With this release, Mieczysław Weinberg’s Cello Concerto joins our already extensive catalogue of his orchestral works that includes his two Flute Concertos (Naxos 8.573931), the Clarinet Concerto (8.574192) and the Violin Concertino (8.572631). • This release is also accompanied by a recording of Weinberg’s Polish Melodies, Op. 47, No. 2 for download and streaming, on Naxos 9.70381. Consisting of an introduction, waltz, polka and mazurka, this is representative of the kind of well-crafted light music that Soviet composers were producing in the ominous last years of Stalin’s reign, with a folk-like character to some of the music, and a final piece featuring an energetic theme resembling something from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake . • Cellist Nikolay Shugaev has collaborated with orchestras such as the St Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Simfonică București, Norrlandsoperan, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra Academy and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba, among others, and has appeared at international festivals such as Ceresio Estate, Società dei Concerti di Milano and the Lucerne Festival. His recording of Malipiero’s Cello Concerto (Naxos 8.574393) made it ‘a thing of beauty and a great success’ ( Fanfare ), and saw him admired as ‘an eloquent soloist’ ( Gramophone ).

About Yuri Medianik, Conductor Yuri Medianik has been the artistic director and chief conductor of the Tyumen Philharmonic Orchestra since 2022, and is recognised as a distinguished conductor and multiinstrumentalist (violin, bayan, bandoneon) in Russia and internationally. He graduated from the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory (violin) and the Gnesin Russian

History of the Russian Piano Trio, Vol. 6 Sergey RACHMANINOV (1873–1943) Trios élégiaques The Brahms Trio – Nikolai Sachenko, Violin Kirill Rodin, Cello Natalia Rubinstein, Piano

7 47313 46877 5

Sergey Rachmaninov’s two Elegiac Trios became the pinnacle of Russian musical symbolism, forming an epigraph to the revolutionary upheavals that split Russian civilisation and Rachmaninov’s life in two. The moods of nostalgia and echoes of soulful longing found in these works are infused with ideas of death. The beautiful theme of the Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor transforms into a funeral march in the epilogue, while the complex Trio élégiaque No. 2 in D minor is a memorial to Tchaikovsky filled with powerfully prophetic symbols most notably the Dies irae motif. Key features: • The first part of our History of the Russian Piano Trio edition concluded with a fifth volume (Naxos 8.574116) released in July 2021, resulting in a highly collectable anthology which was the first of its kind to be released on disc with Gramophone concluded that ‘this top-class ensemble restores their magic… this “ History of the Russian Piano Trio” is a set to treasure’. •

Companion titles – Previous releases in the History of the Russian Piano Trio series

Now The Brahms Trio returns with its follow-up; a second part devoted to the Silver Age and Russian Art Nouveau. Rachmaninov’s two Elegiac Trios are core elements of the piano trio repertoire and of pre-revolutionary Russian music, and while there are numerous recordings that pair them together there will be few enthusiasts not wanting to add The Brahms Trio’s recording to their collections, especially given the superlative quality of their previous Naxos recordings.

Gaetano DONIZETTI (1797–1848) Lucie de Lammermoor Opera in three acts (1839) French libretto by Alphonse Royer (1803–1875) and Gustave Vaëz (1812–1862) Caterina Sala, Soprano David Astorga, Julien Henric, Patrick Kabongo, Tenors Vito Priante, Baritone • Roberto Lorenzi, Bass-baritone Coro dell’Accademia Teatro alla Scala Orchestra Gli Originali Pierre Dumoussaud

7 30099 05787 5

Acknowledged as a definitive model of Italian Romantic melodrama, Lucia di Lammermoor was one of Donizetti’s greatest triumphs, and its popularity led him to produce a French version for Parisian audiences. Lucie de Lammermoor became the ‘other Lucia’, with the opera’s tragic tale of feuding families and doomed romance modified in a way that deepens the characters and makes it an even more brutal and emotional theatrical experience than the original. This new Lucie de Lammermoor made its debut in 1839 with enormous success, becoming a cornerstone of French culture. Key features: • This production of Lucie de Lammermoor , the French adaptation of Donizetti’s triumphal Lucia di Lammermoor , is our disc release of an acclaimed production that since September 2024 has been available as a DVD/Blu-ray on the Dynamic label (DYN-58030). •

7 47313 45827 1

The music on this recording was written between 1772 and 1782, largely during Mozart’s difficult time in Salzburg employed as Konzertmeister under the regime of Prince-Archbishop Colloredo. Transcribed for keyboard from orchestral originals by Mozart himself, these dances were composed as part of his court duties and they reflect both the tastes of the day, and Mozart’s facility in refining popular genres into stylish pieces with his typical grace and panache. As an exception, the March No. 1 in C major was mentioned by Mozart’s widow Constanze as a piece ‘my husband of blessed memory composed for me’. Key features: • Young Vietnamese pianist Tung Nguyen appears here in his Naxos debut. He has performed in numerous concerts in Europe and Oregon as a soloist and collaborative pianist, and is the laureate of national and international piano competitions, notably the Young Musician International Competition ‘Città di Barletta’ in Italy, and the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Young Artist Competition spanning Oregon and the Northwest region. • Tung Nguyen has performed with major chamber groups and orchestras in Oregon, including the Eugene Symphony, Oregon Bach Collegium, Oregon Mozart Players and at the Oregon Bach Festival.

Erich ZEISL (1905–1959) Lieder, Vol. 3 Sara Hershkowitz, Soprano So-Mang Jeagal, Gloria Cheng, Pianos

7 30099 14713 2

By the age of 30 Erich Zeisl was considered one of Vienna’s leading composers. His compositions included chamber works, choral and orchestral pieces, opera and ballet, and Lieder. His settings from Des Knaben Wunderhorn invariably evoke a Mahlerian lineage as Zeisl draws on imagery of light and dark, sunshine and death. In this volume his early songs are juxtaposed with his last, from 1938, a graphic setting of Komm süsser Tod . In exile he wrote no more songs. After the Anschluss, which wrecked his career, Zeisl escaped to America where he endured frustration and ultimately rejection as a film composer at MGM. During this time he composed a piano anthology for his daughter, Barbara, in which he created charming miniatures tailored for the young learner. Key features: • 2025 is the 120th anniversary of Zeisl’s birth. • Sara Hershkowitz is an American coloratura soprano active in Germany. Her debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic was praised by The New Yorker as one of the top opera picks of 2018. • Gloria Cheng won a GRAMMY Award for her 2008 Piano Music of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Steven Stucky, and Witold Lutosławski, and a nomination for The Edge of Light: Messiaen/Saariaho . ‘[It] was Cheng, who played with her customary refined brilliance for tone colour, rhythmic devotion and striking capacity to make every gesture matter, that turned disparate pieces into both garland and garden’ ( Los Angeles Times ). • So-Mang Jeagal won the Grand Prize at the Korea Music Foundation Competition and First Prizes at esteemed international competitions such as the Washington International Piano Competition and the Liszt International Music Competition.

Parole in Musica Music for Guitar Trio BERNSTEIN • GRIEG • HADJIDAKIS • ISOLANI • RAVEL The Volterra Project Trio – Antigoni Goni, Luca Isolani, Maarten Vandenbemden, Guitars

7 47313 91727 3

This diverse programme of works for guitar trio is bound by the common thread of music inspired by stories from literature, stage or screen. With its rhythmic exuberance and tragic beauty, Bernstein’s West Side Story has never lost its freshness and relevance. Ensemble member Luca Isolani’s Note fuori campo is a homage to the versatile Italian composer Nino Rota, who, like Manos Hadjidakis, first shot to international fame with an Oscar-winning film score. Ravel’s Ma Mère l’Oye evokes the poetry of childhood with a refined expressiveness that makes it as popular and unforgettable as Grieg’s music for Peer Gynt . Key features: • This is a Naxos debut for The Volterra Project Trio , which is a classical guitar trio that reimagines its repertoire by drawing inspiration from European impressionism, Mediterranean folk melodies and cinematic scores. •

A previous album Medio Siglo by the trio was praised by Soundboard Magazine for its ‘deep use of colours and the dazzling arrangements’, and this new recording Parole in Musica presents famous and popular music in superb arrangements that allow us to fall in love with such renowned works all over again. A world premiere in the form of trio member Luca Isolani’s Note fuori campo is the icing on a cake already rich in striking timbres and textures. •

Maarten Vandenbemden , Antigoni Goni and Luca Isolani

With Parole in Musica these three musicians bring their full range of colour and expression to a programme of music inspired by stories from stage, screen and literature, beginning with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet retold as a tragedy on the streets of New York’s West Side through Leonard Bernstein’s brilliant score, and ending with Grieg’s incidental music to scenes from the exotic travels of Ibsen’s anti-hero, Peer Gynt.
