Sergey Rachmaninov’s two Elegiac Trios became the pinnacle of Russian musical symbolism, forming an epigraph to the revolutionary upheavals that split Russian civilisation and Rachmaninov’s life in two. The moods of nostalgia and echoes of soulful longing found in these works are infused with ideas of death. The beautiful theme of the Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor transforms into a funeral march in the epilogue, while the complex Trio élégiaque No. 2 in D minor is a memorial to Tchaikovsky filled with powerfully prophetic symbols most notably the Dies irae motif. Now The Brahms Trio returns with its follow-up; a second part devoted to the Silver Age and Russian Art Nouveau. Rachmaninov’s two Elegiac Trios are core elements of the piano trio repertoire and of pre-revolutionary Russian music, and while there are numerous recordings that pair them together there will be few enthusiasts not wanting to add The Brahms Trio’s recording to their collections, especially given the superlative quality of their previous Naxos recordings.

Acknowledged as a definitive model of Italian Romantic melodrama, Lucia di Lammermoor was one of Donizetti’s greatest triumphs, and its popularity led him to produce a French version for Parisian audiences. Lucie de Lammermoor became the ‘other Lucia’, with the opera’s tragic tale of feuding families and doomed romance modified in a way that deepens the characters and makes it an even more brutal and emotional theatrical experience than the original. This new Lucie de Lammermoor made its debut in 1839 with enormous success, becoming a cornerstone of French culture. Patrick Kabongo
The superb cast for this production is topped by soprano Caterina Sala (Lucie), who won the 2018 ASLICO competition and made her operatic debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 2019. Since then she has taken leading roles in Milan, Venice and beyond, winning First Prize at the 2020 at the Portofino International Opera Competition along the way.
