WHAT YOU CAN’T GOOGLE WHY HUMANS STILL HAVE A PLACE IN SALES

Buying an industrial pump is less like buying a car and more like buying the parts to build a car from scratch. Sure, there are plenty of YouTube videos that can teach you about the differences between a centrifugal and positive displacement design, but they won’t delve into how to fit either of these kinds of units into your facility. That doesn’t stop some people from trying, though, often with embarrassing consequences. We frequently see people who’ve installed their own air compressors in enclosures that are too small. These individuals read far enough into the Wikipedia page to know that the noise these units make requires them to often have their own dedicated room. However, when inclosing their compressor, people often forget to leave enough room for the maintenance hatches to open fully. Many a poor technician has had to twist themselves into a pretzel just to do routine maintenance on these DIY units. The same kinds of mistakes happen with pumps. Often, someone will purchase one online that fits their exact needs, but they fail to pay as much attention to the rest of the line. For example, they may fit their 4-inch pump with a 3-inch pipe, cutting their flow rate substantially. The time and money it will take to either replace the pump or all the pipes down the line could have been saved by a phone call. That’s why I believe there’s still room for us humans in this digital age. Experienced industry professionals know to ask the questions you might not think to Google. We won’t just make sure you have the proper space and equipment for your new process, we’ll also ensure they fit your long-term goals. If you’re aiming for growth in the next six months, you want a unit that can keep up with the increased demand. The last thing we’d want to do is sell you a Mustang when what you need is a Taurus.

Two decades ago, my wife and I almost bought a Mustang. We were young, both had good jobs, and thought to ourselves, “Why not get a muscle car?” Neither of us knew a whole lot about automobiles; it just seemed like a fun choice. Thankfully, fate intervened. I’m not sure what it was, but for some reason, on the way to the dealership, Margaret and I decided we should just get a Taurus instead. I know, going from a hot rod to a sedan is quite the leap, but in hindsight, I’m glad we made it. Later in the same month, we found out we were pregnant. While a sports car would have been fun for a young couple with no responsibilities, that Taurus ended up being exactly the vehicle our growing family needed. Unfortunately, many plant owners don’t get the same flash of foresight my wife and I did. All too often, when searching for compressors, pumps, and blowers, entrepreneurs only think about what they need for where their business is right now . They look at the specs for what they need at the moment instead of leaving room to grow — they get the two-seater sports car over the five-star safety rated sedan. The internet is where this metaphor breaks down. These days, when you’re in the market for a new car, a little research online can go a long way. You can spec out the exact model you want and have a pretty comprehensive understanding of what you’re going to get. But this experience doesn’t translate well when it comes to industrial solutions. Unlike cars, there are many external, niche considerations that go into the selection and installation of pumps and compressors, yet many business owners attempt to shop for these key parts of their operation solely on the web. Increasingly, plant owners are bypassing salespeople and solely shopping online. This is understandable; it’s how we shop for most things nowadays. Why waste time talking to someone when you can do all the research yourself? This is a perfectly good way to approach getting accessories or replacement parts for your pump, but if you need a whole new system, not talking to industry experts will only cost you time and money in the long run.

REIGNITE YOUR PASSION LESSONS IN INNOVATION FROM HENRY FORD

Henry Ford made the automobile accessible and appealing for the common citizen. This ignited interest in the market from consumers and manufacturers alike, which led to innovations like air conditioning and other appliances we can’t imagine living without today. There were some key factors that played into his success, and, if you apply them to your own journey, you could gain a new perspective and be inspired to create and innovate in your industry.

As entrepreneurs scale their businesses, there is a lot to focus on: hiring the right staff, creating the most effective marketing strategies, and setting up efficient operations. With so much to do, it’s easy to lose sight of your initial vision for your company. If you’re stuck in a rut, know that you’re not alone. Plenty of the most successful entrepreneurs have endured the same struggles and, with a little ambition and a lot of creativity, came out on top. Take Henry Ford, for example.

SALES AND SAILS As a territory manager, Shawn Lies oversees our operations from Macon to Augusta. When he joined our team early this spring, Shawn brought a wealth of knowledge and industry experience with him. Whether it involves air conditioning supply or working with General Electric, he’s no stranger to helping plants find the right solutions for their industrial needs. But more than his knowhow, Shawn’s ability and willingness to learn is his defining strength. Having been a school teacher, it’s clear that Shawn is a lifelong learner. In fact, that’s part of why he was attracted to joining our team! “What makes Pye-Barker stand out is that they believe in education,” he remarks. He adds, “They invest in their employees.” Shawn’s appreciation for knowledge not only means he was able to hit the ground running in his new position, but it also makes him the ideal candidate for the job. A graduate of Old Dominion, Shawn’s always had a love of meeting new people and finding new experiences.“I’ve always been interested in equipment,” he tells us, “and I like people too, so this job was a good fit.” Thus, Shawn had no problem getting up to speed when joining Pye-Barker, never hesitating to ask questions and tackle new challenges. “There’s so much to discover,” he says, “not just in this business, but in the world. It keeps life exciting — if you make yourself available to it.”

TERRITORY MANAGER SHAWN LIES

When he can get away from the office, you’ll most likely find Shawn out on the water with his 9-year-old daughter. “We’ve got a 12-foot sailboat. I’m a tall guy,” he explains with a laugh, “but we’ll jam both of us in there and sail out to Deer Island.” Reflecting on sales and his love of sailing, Shawn observes, “In both cases, you have to finesse things instead of forcing them. If you let them happen organically, then you’ll find real progress.”

EXCELLENCE IN SANITARY INNOVATIONS

CONSUMER-FOCUSED Ford realized cars were unreliable and unaffordable to most and set out to change that. After developing the first moving assembly line, Ford lowered the price of cars and made them accessible for people outside the upper class for the first time. As long as you keep the consumer and their needs in mind, you’ll find ways to make their experience better and increase your success. SMALL CHANGES, BIG IMPACT Unlike many companies today who sacrifice quality for quantity, Ford found ways to focus on both. He looked at how cars were actually made and found that, if he could build more cars within a certain time frame, he could pay less per car, per worker. Thus, the moving assembly line was born. When looking for ways to innovate in your industry, rethinking even the smallest, simplest details can make a huge difference for your business. You may not be able to reinvent the wheel, but who said you couldn’t reinvent the brake pads? Henry Ford may have changed the automobile industry forever, but you don’t have to go to such lengths to innovate in your own. The next time you find yourself uninspired or stagnant, look to those who made your industry what it is today. You might just find the inspiration you’ve been searching for. LAUGH OUT LOUD

‘Mr. October’: The Legendary Reggie Jackson

“I feel that the most important requirement in success is learning to overcome failure. You must learn to tolerate it, but never accept it.” –Reggie Jackson Some people shine brightest in the spotlight. When put to the test, they deliver every time. Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson is one of those people. During the sixth game of the 1977 World Series, Jackson hit three home runs in a row, securing the Yankees’ victory over the Dodgers and winning them their 21st World Series title. The legendary playoff game also earned Jackson the nickname “Mr. October,” which has stuck to this day. Like many stories of greatness, Jackson’s featured a lot of hard work behind the scenes. He dedicated himself to his sport and constantly worked to improve his play. Growing up, Jackson played baseball, basketball, and football and excelled at all three, though football was his strong suit. He was scouted and given opportunities to go pro straight out of high school, but, on the advice of his father, he went to college on a football scholarship. Thanks to a $5 bet, he tried out for the baseball team at Arizona REGGIE ‘MR. OCTOBER’ JACKSON’S LEGENDARY GAME HOW’S THAT FOR ODDS?

State University and made it. Jackson was the first black person on the team, and, even though he experienced discrimination, he never let it stop him. From the minor leagues into the majors, Jackson’s ambition got him through many tough times, as did the constant support of his father and of Oakland A’s manager John McNamara. Jackson always dreamed of playing for New York, and, eventually, his dream came true when he signed with the New York Yankees in 1976. To this day, Jackson holds many prominent records, including being the first player to earn more than 100 home runs for three different teams (the A’s, Yankees, and Angels). He even has his own candy bar, the “Reggie! Bar,” which debuted during a Yankees game in 1978. Let’s see if any of this year’s playoff games stir up as much excitement as Reggie Jackson’s did in his heyday.
