REIGNITE YOUR PASSION LESSONS IN INNOVATION FROM HENRY FORD

Henry Ford made the automobile accessible and appealing for the common citizen. This ignited interest in the market from consumers and manufacturers alike, which led to innovations like air conditioning and other appliances we can’t imagine living without today. There were some key factors that played into his success, and, if you apply them to your own journey, you could gain a new perspective and be inspired to create and innovate in your industry.

As entrepreneurs scale their businesses, there is a lot to focus on: hiring the right staff, creating the most effective marketing strategies, and setting up efficient operations. With so much to do, it’s easy to lose sight of your initial vision for your company. If you’re stuck in a rut, know that you’re not alone. Plenty of the most successful entrepreneurs have endured the same struggles and, with a little ambition and a lot of creativity, came out on top. Take Henry Ford, for example.

SALES AND SAILS As a territory manager, Shawn Lies oversees our operations from Macon to Augusta. When he joined our team early this spring, Shawn brought a wealth of knowledge and industry experience with him. Whether it involves air conditioning supply or working with General Electric, he’s no stranger to helping plants find the right solutions for their industrial needs. But more than his knowhow, Shawn’s ability and willingness to learn is his defining strength. Having been a school teacher, it’s clear that Shawn is a lifelong learner. In fact, that’s part of why he was attracted to joining our team! “What makes Pye-Barker stand out is that they believe in education,” he remarks. He adds, “They invest in their employees.” Shawn’s appreciation for knowledge not only means he was able to hit the ground running in his new position, but it also makes him the ideal candidate for the job. A graduate of Old Dominion, Shawn’s always had a love of meeting new people and finding new experiences.“I’ve always been interested in equipment,” he tells us, “and I like people too, so this job was a good fit.” Thus, Shawn had no problem getting up to speed when joining Pye-Barker, never hesitating to ask questions and tackle new challenges. “There’s so much to discover,” he says, “not just in this business, but in the world. It keeps life exciting — if you make yourself available to it.”

TERRITORY MANAGER SHAWN LIES

When he can get away from the office, you’ll most likely find Shawn out on the water with his 9-year-old daughter. “We’ve got a 12-foot sailboat. I’m a tall guy,” he explains with a laugh, “but we’ll jam both of us in there and sail out to Deer Island.” Reflecting on sales and his love of sailing, Shawn observes, “In both cases, you have to finesse things instead of forcing them. If you let them happen organically, then you’ll find real progress.”
