Russell Library to be renamed in honour of former mayor

The Russell Library Branchwill soon have a new name. Amotion was approved by Russell coun- cil earlier this week to rename the Russell Library Branch, located on Concession St., after former Mayor Jean-Paul St. Pierre, who passed away while in office in October 2014. St.PierresatontheRussellTownshipcoun- cil for a total of eight years, both as council- lor and later as mayor. The proposal stated that St. Pierre, who was very involved in the community, helped pioneer such projects as the newRussell Library, the Embrun Fire Hall and dog park projects. In regards to the new location of the Russell Library, St-Pierre is credited with having suggested the new location and having played a key role in the project, ultimately conducting the opening ceremony. “I believe that naming one of the most beautiful buildings in our township after our former mayor, Jean-Paul St-Pierre, is very ap- propriate and is a great way to keep him in our community. As chair of the Library board I will say that we are very proud to name the Russell Branch of the Library after J.P.” added councillor Amanda Simard. During the meeting on Monday, coun- cillor Jamie Laurin asked that this motion be taken out of the list of consent items, preferring to show an official registered vote, signifying the importance of St. Pierre and his work in the community.
