The word, “then,” with which this verse begins, is important; it was after seven years that the tribes of Israel came to this decision. First, the people acknowledged the relationship between t h em , saying, “We are thy bone and thy flesh” (v.l). They had known this fact all the time, but had not been ready to acknowledge it earlier. It is not lack of information, tbut lack of trust that hinders people f r o m accepting the Lord’s purposes.- Second, the- people acknowledged David’s right to reign. ‘They knew God had anointed him to be king, and they knew the record of his life in

7 Therefore now let yo u r hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over'them. 5:1 Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Be hold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. 2 Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the Lord said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel. 3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and King David made a league with them in Hebron before the Lord: and they anointed Qavid king over Israel. 4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven yearf and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over ail Israel and Judah. 6 And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto« the Jebusites, the inhabit ants of the land: which spake unto David» saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither. 7 Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion: the same is the city of David. 8 And David said on that day, Whoso ever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the Tame and the blind, that are hated of David's soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. 9 So David dwelt In the fort, and called It the city of David. And David built round about from M'illo and inward. 10 And David went on, and ^grew great, and the Lord God of hosts was with him. LESSON T E X T : 2 Sam. 2:4-7; 5:1-10. T he K in g d o m E s t a b l is h e d o ver J u d a h (2:4-7) S HE LORD had anointed David told to go to Hebron (vs. 1-3). The men of Judah' came to Hebron and anointed David as their king. David knew God’s purpose, and he had shown that he would await God’s time, rather than to follow the natural impulse of seizing the throne himself. When he followed the Lord’s direction, he found Judah already prepared to take the necessary action. The provi dences of God may sometimes appear uncertain, but they dovetail perfectly in God’s plan. k t Hebron, it was told David what the men of Jabesh-gilead had done for Saul, and David sent a message to them stating that he had no venge ful spirit toward the friends of his one-time enemy. Because they, had honored their fallen king, David de sired that the Lord would show them kindness. Moreover, he himself de sired to reward them, and he promised to "requite you this kindness” (v. 6). Thus he prepared the men of Jabesh- gilead for the thought of his kingship,

as king, but it remained for the people to accept him as such. After the death of Saul, David was
