Great Smiles of New Jersey - April 2021

If you’ve come into Great Smiles on a Tuesday or Thursday in the last two months, then you might have met Dr. Sarang Choi. I’ve been hunting for another dentist to add to our team for three years, but I set a high bar and no one met it until Dr. Choi came along! During her interview, she impressed me with her drive, her bubbly personality, and her willingness to go above and beyond for her patients. Like me, she’s also dedicated to taking care of the health of a patient’s whole body, not just their teeth! I’ve had my hands full with appointments for the last few years, and I know having her on the team will help you get scheduled more quickly! Dr. Choi is from South Korea, where she entered her first dental hygiene program as a college student and fell in love with dentistry. I AM PROUD TO INTRODUCE DR. SARANG CHOI! A BRILLIANT PRACTITIONER AND TIKTOK STAR

Q: What inspired you to become a dentist? A: I love to work with my hands. My dad is an architect, and he always built little models, and I always helped him. I’m really good at building small things, so I thought working with teeth would be a good fit! I also love beauty, fashion, and art, and dentistry is a great mixture of medicine, art, and engineering.

At 23, Dr. Choi moved to the U.S. to continue studying dentistry. She earned her master’s in biomedical science in oral biology from Rutgers University. Then, she traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to earn her doctorate in dental medicine from Nova Southeastern University. She learned cutting-edge dental techniques from some of the best minds in the dental field and received specialized training for cosmetic dentistry, endodontics, and oral surgery. Dr. Choi enjoys her work so much that she keeps thinking about dentistry off the clock! She has popular channels on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok under the name “SarangDMD,” where she loves to share dental tips.

Q: Wait, you’re on TikTok? Tell me about your content! A: I make dental-related videos that are entertaining but at the same time informative. Sometimes I’ll make rap songs and try to teach how to floss and how to brush. I’ve heard from my followers that young kids play the songs while brushing their teeth, and it’s very fulfilling to see those comments!

Q: Why are you so passionate about discussing dentistry on social media? A: I like to share my journey because I took a nontraditional path to become a dentist, so I encourage people not to give up on their dreams. I say, “Pursue whatever you want, just make sure you’re consistent!” I am living proof of that, so I try to deliver that message as well as share my life with people and try to inspire them if I can.

I'm proud to welcome Dr. Choi to the team! She can’t wait to meet you, so the next time you come in for a dental visit, be sure to say hello.
