Colour scheming | colour & application
Light colours reflect light which makes a space feel larger. Painting walls and woodwork in the same colour creates a monochromatic scheme that elongates the length of the walls and makes a space seem taller.

Warm, dark colours come forward in space and make a space appear smaller whilst cool light colours appear to make a space recede and seem larger. This principle can also be applied to ‘visually correct’ the areas within a room which feel out of proportion. If a ceiling feels too high, a warm colour can be applied to the ceiling to make it feel lower. A light cool colour can be used to make a ceiling feel higher than it actually is.
Dark colours might instinctively be colours to avoid if you are looking to create a feeling of space, as people fear making their room look smaller. But, conversely, very rich blues and greens create a depth which our eyes find hard to focus on – and thus create a sense of a wall being further away than it actually is.
