POND, DETENTION: A low lying area that acts as a temporary storage facility for stormwater runoff, designed to help prevent flash flooding after heavy rainfalls. Detained stormwater is later released by gravity or by mechanical means, at a time when downstream facilities are better able to handle the flow.
PORTABLE STORAGE CONTAINER: A portable, enclosed, weather-resistant receptacle, with a storage capacity of at least 150 cubic feet, designed and used for the storage or shipment of household goods or other materials. (Often known as PODS or MODS.)

 Photo: Detention Pond (example) POND, RETENTION: A pond or basin designed to help manage stormwater runoff, and intended to hold a specific amount of water indefinitely. Retention ponds typically incorporate structures to control overflow drainage, to maintain a maximum water level after heavy rainfall.


PRELIMINARY PLAT: See PLAT/PRELIMINARY PLAT. PRELIMINARY REVIEW: The Site Plan Review Committee's consideration of an Applicant's sketch plans and basic approach to a proposed project, submitted under a two-stage Site Plan Review process. The Committee may express opinions on the project's acceptability during a preliminary review, but will not take formal action. PRINCIPAL STRUCTURE: A structure in which a principal use of the lot on which the structure is located is conducted. PRINCIPAL USE: See USE, PRINCIPAL. PRIVATE CLUB: An organization licensed as a Class A or B club for the purpose of consuming alcoholic beverages, either for profit or not for profit under K.S.A. 41-2601, et seq ., as amended. (See SOCIAL OR SERVICE CLUB.) PROFESSIONAL SURVEYOR: A professional surveyor licensed by the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions to practice in the State of Kansas (See LAND PLANNER.)

POOL HOUSE: A freestanding enclosed structure constructed near an outdoor swimming pool, which may be used simply to store pool equipment, or may include a bathroom, kitchen, game room or even guest quarters.
