ILM SFX ANIMATION: MS: of Spirit and broken wheel.
STEVE SQUYRES: And then the right front wheel failed.
ASHLEY STROUPE: Somebody said, “This is a lot like that grocery cart with the stuck wheel that is easier to pull than push.” And we’re like, “Pull, yes, let’s go backwards!”
ILM SFX ANIMATION: Spirit moving backwards.
DOUG ELLISON: So Spirit slowly drove backwards through Columbia Hills, dragging this broken wheel as we went. And it was awful because winter was coming.
KOBIE BOYKINS: So, a Martian winter is twice as long as it is on Earth. So it gets really cold.
JENNIFER TROSPER: It gets so cold that you have to use much of your energy to keep all of your hardware above a certain temperature or it’s likely to break. STEVE SQUYRES: At the Spirit site, we desperately wanted a way to tilt the solar arrays towards the sun. But the only way to do that was to tilt the entire vehicle.
ILM SFX ANIMATION: Spirit going backward uphill.
STEVE SQUYRES: Spirit would have to climb backwards on this rocky, rugged terrain to stay alive all through the winter.
ILM SFX ANIMATION: CU: Spirit’s head.
DOUG ELLISON: It’s not just the seasons, you also have things like dust storms.
