WIFE, NURSE, AND MOTHER MAY IS FOR TAMARA HESS

May is a month of celebrations at the Hess household. We’ve got Mother’s Day, Nurses Day, and three birthdays, one right after another. True, two of those birthdays are for our pets, but we go all out for them! Both Autumn the cat and Chase the dog get treats and a new toy from the pet store. And

we make a day of it. From landscaping materials to beautiful hanging baskets, she gets our whole yard mapped out that day. Come summer, our yard is a blanket of colorful flowers! And last but not least, there’s Tamara’s birthday. Because she’s two years my senior, I’ve been guilty of teasing her about her age from time to time. She is technically a child of the ’60s, whereas I was born in the ’70s. Still, I try to keep the jokes to a minimum on her actual birthday. In the past, we’ve gone out to dinner in celebration. I’ve even managed to pull off a few surprise parties in the past. But in recent years, we’ve settled on an even more fun family tradition. On her birthday weekend, we make the drive to Cedar Point, Ohio — her favorite amusement park. She and I have always loved roller coasters, so of course we’re going to go to “the roller coaster capital of the world.” It helps that the kids are a “fun” age now, where they can go on the rides along with us! So that’s how our month looks. It’s a whirlwind of celebrations and activities! Honestly, we couldn’t pack enough appreciation for Tamara into a month if we tried. She was an incredible nurse, and she’s an amazing wife. I could not ask for a better mother to our children. She gave up the career she loved to raise them, and she did so with grace, love, and understanding. Whatever our children’s needs, she bent over backward to give it to them. Tamara, thank you for taking this amazing roller coaster ride of a life with me. This month is for you. – George Hess

First comes National Nurses Day. Tamara became a registered nurse back in 1991, and she went on to work in critical and cardiac care. Not only did she thrive in such a technical, high-pressure environment, she genuinely loved her work. But when our first child was born, tough choices had to be made. Ultimately, Tamara decided it was best to take on the mantle of mother as a full-time job. While she has not worked as a nurse in any official capacity for over a decade, any time someone gets sick around the house, she’s the care expert. In recognition of her years of service as a medical professional, and for all the runny noses and sore throats she’s treated in the years since, the kids and I always get her a card on May 6. Next on the calendar is Mother’s Day. In addition to taking Tamara out somewhere to eat, we also like to indulge her passion for gardening. May is the perfect time for her to pick out supplies anyway, so

ROAD TRIPS DON’T HAVE TO BE PAINFUL TRY GAMES, AUDIOBOOKS, AND PODCASTS TO PASS THE TIME

Summer is right around the corner, which means you’ll soon pile the whole family into the car, ready to brave the road for a vacation. Everyone knows that riding in the car for hours can be torture. But with a little creativity, you can turn the worst part of a long trip into a fun event. PACK A TRAVEL GAME

a car full of storytellers, try “Fortunately, Unfortunately.” The rules are simple. The first person starts by saying, “fortunately,” and mentioning something good about the road trip or the destination. The next person (moving clockwise) then follows by saying something “unfortunate” about the previous person’s statement. Take turns with every passenger in the car. If someone stumbles, they get a strike; three strikes and you’re out. The last passenger standing wins. PLAY AN AUDIOBOOK OR PODCAST We get it. Sometimes passengers don’t want to play games. Occasionally, they’d rather relax or take a nap. However, your listening material doesn’t have to be limited to Dad’s favorite music. Instead, consider listening to a family-friendly audiobook or podcast, which can make the longest and most boring parts of your trip an entertaining or educational experience. Almost any popular book is available in audio form, but it can be hard to find an enjoyable podcast. “Transistor” is a science-focused podcast that explores subjects kids and adults will find fascinating. Or if you’re looking for something fictional, try “Storynory,” in which the narrator tells fairy tales and legends from all over the globe.

When the excitement of the family vacation starts to wear off, keep the peace and entertain your kids with a travel game. Many

board game manufacturers offer travel-sized versions that are easy to pack and play in the car. Before your next road trip, consider purchasing digital Yahtzee, which packs all the fun of the classic game without the dice, or IQ Fit, a logic game with over 100 challenges. Both games cost around $10 and can provide hours of entertainment. INCLUDE THE WHOLE FAMILY Once the travel games no longer pique anyone’s interest, try an activity that can be fun for the whole family: a traditional road trip game. If you have

“I came to Hess Physical Therapy during my winter break from college. My goal was to regain the mobility I had lost in my low back due to running on an old stress fracture. I was unable to bend forward and backward, and I could not sleep due to the pain. Now I am able to sleep and move without pain, and I plan to start training for my indoor track season at Wheeling Jesuit University! I cannot thank everyone enough!”

“I am forever grateful to Hess Physical Therapy! I sustained a low back injury and had difficulty with even the simplest of tasks, like walking, going up and down stairs, or getting in the car. The staff at Hess PT was kind and professional. They quickly got me an appointment and were flexible with scheduling, as my wife and I were expecting our baby to be born. The exercises, massages, and electrical stimulation were very helpful. I now have full range of motion, and am pain-free thanks to the knowledge and expertise of the staff at Hess PT! Thank you again!”

PREGNANCY DOESN’T HAVE TO BE PAINFUL

GRILLED SKIRT STEAK WITH ASPARAGUS

Inspired by Food Network

INGREDIENTS • 1 1/2 pounds skirt steak • 2 tablespoons canola oil • 1 pound asparagus • 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper

CONSIDER PRENATAL MASSAGE THERAPY

• Salt and pepper to taste • Grated pecorino Romano cheese

1. Heat grill to high. Season room-temperature steak with salt, pepper, and 1 tablespoon oil. Any oil with a high smoke point, such as canola, will work. 2. Trim bottom inch of asparagus and season with salt, pepper, and remainder of oil. 3. Cut steak into four portions and grill for 3–5 minutes per side, depending on desired doneness. Skirt steak is thin and will cook quickly. 4. Let steak rest for 10 minutes. While it’s resting, grille asparagus for 6 minutes, turning once. 5. Sprinkle cheese and crushed red pepper on asparagus. Serve alongside steak. INSTRUCTIONS

With mothers being celebrated this month, we thought we’d shine a light on a little-known service that can make a big difference for women who are expecting: prenatal massage. This specialized area of physical therapy can alleviate some of the many aches and pains of pregnancy. If you’re expecting (or know someone who is), prenatal massage can make you happier and more comfortable. REDUCE SWELLING Many of the body aches experienced during pregnancy are linked to swelling. The weight of the uterus creates pressure that restricts circulation, causing fluid to build up in your soft tissue. Proper massage techniques can relieve this buildup, reducing swelling and the pain it causes. PROMOTE RELAXATION In general, massages are great at relieving emotional stress. But studies show that massage during pregnancy can have tangible, positive effects on your hormone balance as well. According to the Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynaecology, prenatal massages can help balance your norepinephrine, cortisol, and serotonin levels, reducing stress and improving your mood. IMPROVE SCIATIC PAIN The weight and stress of pregnancy causes a lot of inflammation to your nerves. Sciatica — a shooting pain in the buttocks and lower back — is common in the second and third trimesters, but it’s often treatable. Regular massage therapy can relieve the pressure and inflammation, improving comfort and mobility. Expecting mothers have enough on their minds without worrying about body aches and pains. Visiting a licensed prenatal massage therapist, like our own Daniel Haas, will relieve the stress in your muscles, your nerves, and your mind! Dan has years of experience in this specialized field, meaning you’ll get a massage that is both safe and effective. Swelling, stress, and sciatica don’t have to be endured in silence. Schedule an appointment today!

“Hess Physical Therapy has been a wonderful experience! My latest issue was numbness in half of my left index finger and total numbness in my pinkie finger. With adjustments, exercise, and massage, I have total feeling again! Each and every staff member is pleasant and professional, and they want to help you maintain your lifestyle with minimal or no pain. Thank you to Dr. Andrew for figuring out and getting rid of my numbness!”

GET YOUR GRILL ON 2 MAY HOLIDAYS, 2 REASONS TO GRILL

Is there anything more American than grilling a burger outside on Memorial Day? This year, there’s another reason to fire up the grill that weekend: In addition to being Memorial Day, May 28 is also National Hamburger Day! Enjoy this delicious coincidence by heating up the grill, gathering the fixings, and making one of these tasty burgers at home. THE CLASSIC BURGER

peppers and arugula for flavor and texture. If you want to get extra fancy, pour a bit of balsamic reduction over the patty before adding the toppings. THE PORTOBELLO BURGER

For a delicious veggie burger even meat eaters will love, use a portobello mushroom as your patty. Remove the stems, then marinate the mushrooms for 15 minutes in a mixture of 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, 3 tablespoons olive oil, and a clove of minced garlic. Season the shrooms with salt and pepper, then place them on the grill just as you would any other burger. Gruyere cheese is the perfect creamy topping, and you can use grilled focaccia bread topped with garlic aioli.

Nothing beats the American classic: a seasoned beef patty, a slice of cheddar cheese, a squirt each of mustard and ketchup, a layer of crunchy lettuce, some thinly sliced onions, and a couple of zesty pickles. For a homemade touch, make the pickles yourself by soaking cucumbers in a brine of vinegar, dill, and salt. THE MEDITERRANEAN BURGER

As you bask in the late spring weather and the inviting smell of delicious food this Memorial Day, take a moment to remember the Americans who gave their lives so we could enjoy these freedoms, and thank those who served.

Take your patty to the next level with a Mediterranean twist. Mix feta cheese and garlic into your ground beef before forming your patties. Serve it on a grilled ciabatta bun topped with marinated red
