On her first night home when Janice gave her a crayon and coloring book, ZhenAi did not know what to do. “She had no idea what to do with the crayon,” Janice says. “Little by little we showed her how to make the strokes and colour within the lines. By the end of that night, she had coloured this huge piece flawlessly. She has the ability to learn, but she was overlooked. Now, by golly, we’re going to give her every opportunity to reach her potential.” Bring on the Future Janice has a canvas wall-hanging in her office that reads, “Don’t look back. You’re not going that way.” She’s always viewed her story as one of surrender, embracing whatever comes her way with grace and a willingness to find strength in the struggle. “The whole story of adoption is a story of brokenness—broken hearts and broken families,” Janice says. “But it’s also a journey of redemption. Here’s a family that will pick up the pieces and try to put them back together, even though there will always be scars.”
