PLAN TODAY, PROTECT TOMORROW It’s National Estate Planning Awareness Week

Creating an estate plan is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family if the unexpected were to happen. The loss of a loved one can cause dramatic changes in our lives. In the days, weeks, and months after a loss, you should have time to grieve and reminisce, but too often, people are thrown into a difficult situation where they have to go through probate because their loved one did not have an estate plan in place. Don’t make this mistake! From Oct. 16–22, we recognize National Estate Planning Awareness Week, which provides us with an opportunity to create or update our estate plans.

The simple truth is that most people are uncomfortable having the estate planning

conversation. Nobody likes talking about death, incapacitation, or the lingering “what ifs” that come into play. I can tell you right now that it’s not going to be a fun conversation, but it is one of the most loving and meaningful conversations we can have with our families. If we can push through the discomfort, we can make some challenging and tough times easier for everyone involved. In honor of National Estate Planning Awareness Week, we want to help you and your family start the estate planning conversation and answer any questions that may arise. To do so, we’re offering a huge discount on our estate planning essentials webinar. Our webinar usually costs $200, but we’re slashing that price and offering it for free to our clients and their loved ones. All you have to do is scan the QR code or visit bit.ly/epawarenessweek to register. We’ll discuss many important estate planning topics that will help provide you with some direction. Our webinar will help you better understand the basic elements of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives. You’ll discover how to ensure your assets are distributed according to your wishes, avoid probate, and minimize estate taxes. Homeowners, business owners, married couples, parents, retirees, individuals from blended families, and just about anyone else you can think of will benefit from attending this webinar. When I speak to people at a workshop or host a seminar where I discuss what happens during probate and how to avoid it with an estate plan, around 90% of people tell me they were unaware

of this information and the need for an estate plan. I think that’s why National Estate Planning Awareness Week is so vital. So many people don’t know the ins and outs, and it’s up to those of us who do know to help everyone else. If you’re reading this newsletter, you likely already have an estate plan and know why it’s so important. I want you to pass this newsletter on to a loved one and encourage them to attend our estate planning essentials webinar. You must help the people you care about, or they could accidentally make a difficult situation exponentially worse.

We hope you and your loved ones will gain some critical information from our webinar. Be sure to turn to Page 3 of this newsletter to learn about another exciting event we have planned this month!

Safeguard Your Family’s Future Using Trusts

When people begin the estate planning process, they usually do so to protect their assets and set their children and grandchildren up for success. An estate plan helps you safeguard everything you worked for and distribute your assets to your loved ones. However, many people believe they only need a will, and everything else is just extra, but this is rarely the case. Wills have become synonymous with estate planning thanks to pop culture, but in reality, wills are the bare minimum for most people’s estate planning needs. A will only comes into effect after you’ve passed away. If you become incapacitated, your health care and durable powers of attorney act in your place, which can complicate things. Having a will does not guarantee you’ll avoid probate, either. If you want to safeguard your family and assets fully, consider establishing a trust instead of just having a will. With a trust, you have more freedom and control over the management of your assets. There are different types

of trusts to fit everyone’s specific needs, but they all fall into two categories: revocable and irrevocable. A revocable trust can be changed anytime during the owner’s lifetime. An irrevocable trust is set in stone as soon as you sign the agreement. One of the best parts about trusts is how they help keep your money in the family for generations. Many don’t realize it until they go through probate, but extreme taxes and fees arise after you pass away. Without proper planning, the value of your estate can dwindle to nothing as your family pays these fees, leaving minimal amounts for them. This is not what you want to happen to your loved ones. While trusts can be slightly more expensive than other estate planning options, their benefits are endless. Call us if you have any questions about trusts or want to create one to protect your family and assets.

MEET YOLANDA, OUR NEW WELCOME TEAM COORDINATOR A NEW STAR SHINES

At Shoup Legal, our Welcome Team is here to help our clients as soon as they call our office or walk through our doors. We couldn’t do what we do without our fantastic team, and they continue to exceed expectations with everything they do. In May, we added Yolanda to our team as our new Welcome Team Coordinator, and she has been wowing us and our clients since day one. For nearly 20 years, Yolanda worked as a mortgage banker. In 2010, she decided to start a new venture and began working as an interpreter for Spanish- speaking workers’ compensation clients since she is fluent in Spanish. She would attend clients’ medical appointments and any deposition preparation meetings to interpret for them and ensure they fully understood everything said. She learned a great deal about the legal field while in this position.

Yolanda began working as a veterinary recruiter after working as an interpreter for several years. She helped link veterinary students with potential job opportunities, attempting to place them in their dream offices. While she enjoyed this job, she quickly realized she missed working in the legal field, which led her to Shoup Legal. Yolanda started working with us this past May and has showcased her customer service skills daily since joining our team. Yolanda loves interacting with and assisting clients, especially when she can help a Spanish-speaking client understand a concept that didn’t previously make sense to them. She’s friendly, easy-going, and will listen intently to our clients’ needs so she can deliver the best service possible. She knows from experience how difficult it can be after losing a loved one and wants to comfort all who need it.

Outside of work, Yolanda loves horseback riding and spending time with her family. She and her husband have seven grandchildren, with Yolanda’s youngest being 2 years old. They definitely stay busy with their kids and grandchildren.

We’re so excited to have Yolanda on the team and watch as she grows in her new role!

Cook With Your Kids to Make Mealtime Meaningful!

The trick is quite simple: Have your kids cook with you! Cooking with your kids has multiple benefits that stretch far beyond the kitchen table, but the immediate reward is that you won’t cook alone anymore! Next time dinner time rolls around, grab your little sous-chefs to lend a hand so they can enjoy these three benefits. No. 1: Cooking teaches life skills. It may seem far off, but one day, your child will have to cook for themselves and eventually their own children, too. By teaching them the basics of cooking now, you’re providing them with a skill they’ll need to be capable adults.

experience food for the first time, which can feel like a scary experience.

Kids who help cook in the kitchen are much more likely to try new and adventurous foods because they’re exposed to them and other ingredients over a period of time. They touch, slice, smell, crush, and season the foods before they ever eat them. So, by the time it hits their plate, it’s not so scary! No. 3: Cooking promotes healthy development. Time spent in the kitchen isn’t all about eating, either. While cooking, children stir, mix, measure, roll, squeeze, spread, observe, learn, and count. These activities all help develop fine motor, hand- eye coordination, math, and science skills, not to mention creativity!

As a parent, it can be incredibly challenging to nail down the perfect weeknight dinner menu that makes every hungry mouth in your home happy. This is especially true when you have picky little ones who demand waffles for dinner or dinosaur chicken nuggets seven nights a week. You may feel like your days as a short-order cook are endless, but we’re here to tell you about a simple trick to making healthier meals everyone in your family will enjoy.

No. 2: Cooking creates an adventurous eater.

Imagine seeing something like asparagus or artichoke on the plate in front of you for the first time and being told you must eat that weird-looking thing. That’s how many children
