Packaging Survey Unlocks Industry Semper Workforce Solutions has announced the results of the 2022 second quarter survey of printing and packaging companies, includ- ing: commercial printing, pack- aging, display and large format graphics, apparel and decorating, and others. “Looks like record profits for the second quarter – these are some of the highest numbers I’ve ever seen,” said Dave Regan, Semper In- ternational Co-Founder and CEO. “Companies should be building their cash to weather the coming interest rate hikes, but not all shops are doing well. Not all is “rosy” as you will see in the survey with many businesses reporting steady sales and some reporting decreas- ing sales. With the Fed on its infla- tion rampage we suspect the next survey will really show us some im- pact of their actions.”

Box Manufacturers Aim To Recapture More Fiber Box manufacturers working with the Paper and Packaging Board’s (P+PB) industry-wide residen- tial recycling initiative will take part in PACK EX- PO’s “Pack to the Future” exhibit, October 23-26, at Chicago, Illinois, McCormick Place, where event goers can learn more about this program and expe- rience a virtual reality (VR) journey in a futuristic, time-traveling corrugated car. Box To Nature Developed by P+PB in collaboration with par- ticipating paper and corrugated manufacturing companies and industry partners, this residen- tial recycling “Box to Nature” initiative pairs box manufacturers and e-commerce brands to print a reminder graphic on their boxes that encourages consumers to recycle. The Box to Nature program differs from other packaging recycling initiatives because it specifi- cally addresses paper packaging recycling behav- ior—the bulk of which is related to e-commerce shipping boxes. The Box to Nature graphic provides specific in- structions on how to easily recycle (empty, flat- ten, recycle) and a QR code that directs them to Box2Nature.org where they will find memorable, easy-to-remember messages to encourage recy- cling habits. Message Received When the message was tested before launching the program, 75 percent of consumers indicated they would be more likely to recycle their e-com- merce box after exposure to the graphic. The goal is to increase the residential box recy- cling rate and recapture more fiber to make new paper-based products. Participating brands also get a positive lift in perception among consumers due to the association with their choice to use sustain- able, recyclable paper-based packaging. AIMCAL Changes Name Rebrands

Pixelle To Restart Ohio Paper Machine

AIMCAL, The Association of International Metal- lizers, Coaters and Laminators, is adopting a new name, the Association for Roll-to-Roll Converters. The transition to the new name and related re- branding will occur during the next few months and is expected to be completed by mid-2023. Association Evolution The new name reflects the evolution of AIM- CAL’s membership. Since its founding in 1970 as a group focused primarily on metallizing, coating, and laminating, it has broadened via mergers with the Converting Equipment Association (2003), Eu- ropean Metallizers Association (2012), and Gravure Association of the Americas (2021), as well as the expanding use of roll-to-roll technology. As a result, AIMCAL members now represent virtually every in- dustry segment that relies on roll-to-roll technology including packaging, batteries, photovoltaics, con- sumer electronics, and medical products. To support the emphasis on training, AIMCAL has hired Alex Nevels as Director of Education. He will create new training courses and build content spe- cifically for converters.

Pixelle Specialty Solutions, a manufacturer of spe- cialty papers in North America, plans to restart a paper machine in the Chillicothe, Ohio, facility. The company is investing $21 million to upgrade and restart the #24 paper machine (PM24) and plans to hire 52 full-time employees to operate and maintain it. Pixelle will also fill 50 temporary posi- tions to support construction and engineering re- quirements related to the restart. PM24 was originally built as a coated printing pa- pers machine, upgraded most recently in the 1990s. Pixelle idled the machine in 2017 based on declin- ing supply-demand market dynamics at the time. Pixelle expects the machine to be fully online shipping quality specialty papers in early first quar- ter 2023.
