We strive to deliver real value, high-quality services and a place where everyone can thrive. From being named Council of the Year (now three times) to receiving back-to back Outstanding Ofsted ratings for our children’s services, alongside a host of other accolades, we hope that across our high streets and through every team, we’re making a meaningful mark and living up to the high standards you rightly expect. More love to give

“Every child in care is our responsibility. We’re proud to be rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, but what truly sets us apart is our

commitment to keeping children local – in the schools they love, near the friends they trust, and keep those family connections that matter so much. Please get in touch with our team, even if it’s just for an informal talk.” Councillor Shirley Reynolds Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills

When asked why she chose to foster, Maggie’s immediate response was, “I have more love to give”. Maggie is a new foster carer with

Telford & Wrekin Council and has her first foster children placed with her this summer. As a mother of six, grandmother of five and having spent years as a children’s entertainer, Maggie finally took the plunge to follow her dream of becoming a foster carer. “I’ve always wanted to become a foster carer. I have the space in my home to share and wanted to give children the opportunity to just be kids, no matter what they’re going through,” Maggie said.

Foster with Telford & Wrekin Council Ofsted Outstanding and proud to support every foster carer with: • Exceptional training in therapeutic parenting • Excellent pay, allowances and benefits • A dedicated support team, including direct access to an in-house clinician • A thriving network of carers and professionals

“I want to show them empathy and support and provide a safe space that they can call home. “I’d considered fostering through an agency, but fostering with the Council was the best choice for me as it offers a lot of support to foster carers and the children.” At the time of meeting Maggie, two children had been placed in her care for one week. Maggie added: “The first week has been brilliant, I spent time getting to know the children, gradually introducing healthy routines, and making the most of the school holidays. “We’ve been out every day and within two days both children had learnt to ride a bike, I was so proud of them for giving it a go and succeeding.” To anyone who’d like to follow in Maggie’s footsteps, it’s never too late to foster and Telford & Wrekin Council will help you every step of the way. Fostering can fit anyone’s lifestyle, whether they are working full-time, retired, or looking to give back to their community. The Council offers flexible part-time options for people who can only foster a few days each month.

“We’re proud to have around 1,800 people signed up as Street Champions already, from individuals and families to entire workplaces who are helping to make our Borough a cleaner, greener and better place to live.” Councillor Paul Davis Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Civic Pride.

Champions of change – making every pick count

Telford and Wrekin Street Champions are volunteers who take pride in their neighbourhoods and want to help make them cleaner, safer and more welcoming. Whether it’s litter picking, reporting issues, or supporting community projects, they decide how they want to contribute with the support of the Council. This year, the Great British Spring Clean saw 32 events take place across Telford and Wrekin, with 400 volunteers collecting more than 300 bags of litter. From pruning hedges to raising awareness about environmental issues, Street Champions are a vital part of the Borough’s efforts to keep streets connected – it doesn’t matter how old, everyone is encouraged to get involved. Workplace Street Champions Businesses backing cleaner communities Across Telford and Wrekin, businesses are stepping up to support the environment by encouraging their staff to become Workplace Street Champions. This volunteer scheme enables employees to register and receive free equipment from the Council to carry out litter picks around their workplace during working hours. It’s a simple way to make a visible difference while fostering team spirit and community pride. The first business to sign up was

Cofresco, based at Hortonwood, whose staff have found the experience both rewarding and impactful. Libby Coe, sustainability manager at Cofresco said: “When our company signed up to the new scheme, I wasn’t sure what to expect but it’s been brilliant. We’ve done litter picks around Hortonwood and it’s amazing how something so simple can make such a big difference. It’s not just about cleaning up, it’s about connecting with colleagues, getting fresh air and feeling proud of where we work. If you care about your community and want to boost team spirit, I’d recommend signing up.”

Litter-picking hero for our furry friends

Amelia is a Junior Street Champion, she said: “I always like litter picking because it helps all the small animals that live in our environment, animals such as hedgehogs, rabbits, squirrels and others. I always felt bad for the animals, so I started litter picking and I knew from day one this is basically my job. When my mum, dad and I go litter picking, we once collected 225 cans and bottles. If you would like to help all the small animals, today’s the day you can start. Help us and clean up all the rubbish around us.” Why volunteer? Sense of purpose Helping others and improving your community is great for Volunteering can reduce stress, help with depression, and boost happiness. Physical health Activities like litter picking get you moving and outdoors and are great for your self-esteem. Mental wellbeing

Becoming a Street Champion as a resident or business is easy. All that’s required is an online form and the Council will get you signed up and deliver your equipment. Sign up today at www.telford.gov.uk/StreetChampions

Prices you’ll love when you need them Buses

Plan smarter with Citymapper

Walk down the road in Hadley and you might overhear someone say, “Love it” about the buses. Hop on near Shawbirch and you’re likely to be greeted by “friendly drivers” with a “warm smile”. This is the feedback from Telford & Wrekin Council bus service users gathered from the Council’s annual survey. The team at Travel Telford has already helped passengers with more than 700,000 journeys and residents have said the services are “fantastic”, “reliable” and “always show up without fail”. Spot the new look As part of contract renewal, the Council- operated buses have had a refreshed design. New vehicles hit the roads in the summer, making it easier for passengers to identify which buses are part of the Travel Telford network. Big news for small villages Rural routes 102 and 103 now run every two hours, with Saturday services introduced for the first time. These routes connect villages like Newport, Church Aston and Muxton to key destinations like the Princess Royal Hospital and Wellington. “I rely on the 102 to get to the hospital and back,” said one Donnington resident. “It’s not just a bus, it’s how I stay independent.”

On-demand travel that works for you The new Travel Telford On-Demand service is changing how people travel in Ironbridge and Madeley. Using a simple app, passengers book shared rides with pick-ups to suit their location, these are often closer than traditional stops – similar to booking a taxi. New this year Horsehay and Lightmoor residents can also book journeys to Madeley, the Town Centre, Ironbridge and the Princess Royal Hospital.

The Citymapper app is now fully tailored to Telford and Wrekin. With real-time updates and step-by-step directions, it’s the easiest way to plan your journey across the Borough.

In a bold step toward shaping a brighter future for its youngest residents, Telford & Wrekin Council has unveiled a vision to become a child friendly Borough, a place where every child feels safe, heard, and empowered to thrive. Earlier this year, the green light was given to ‘Child Friendly Telford and Wrekin’ which puts children and young people at the heart of everything the Council does. It’s not just about services, it’s about making sure their voices are heard, and their needs are reflected in decisions that shape their lives. This new approach builds on the Council’s strong track record, including back-to-back Outstanding Ofsted ratings for children’s social care. It also supports the goals set out in the Children and Young People Strategy. Putting young people at the heart of everything

What does child-friendly mean?

For children and young people to thrive they want to feel:

• Healthy • Heard • Safe • Achieving

• Independent • Happy • Surrounded by people they trust

New recruits To ensure children and young people are represented in services and decisions, four ‘Voice of the Child’ new apprentices have been recruited. One of them, Jamie Perkins said: “Having an apprenticeship with the Council has been life changing. It’s not just a job, it’s a chance to grow, to be heard, and to contribute to something bigger. “For someone like me, with

lived experience, it means the Council sees value in our voices and our potential. This opportunity shows that the Borough is serious about being child-friendly, not just in words, but in action. By investing in us, they’re building a future where young people are empowered, included, and supported to thrive.”

Dedicated support The hub offers a drop-in service with access to advice, support, and a welcoming social space to meet others with shared experiences. It also hosts fortnightly Community Cafés, provides IT and digital training, help with everyday tasks, activity programmes, and hardship support. This initiative is a partnership between Telford & Wrekin Council, Great Dawley Town Council and Telford Mind, and is part of a wider outreach programme developed to support the Armed Forces community across the borough. Named in honour of Councillor Chris Turley – a passionate advocate for veterans and a long-serving public servant – the hub reflects his legacy and commitment to those who serve.

A new dedicated hub for the Armed Forces community has opened at Dawley House on Burton Street, Dawley. The Christopher Turley Armed Forces Community Hub welcomes everyone with a military connection – from serving personnel and veterans to reservists and family members.

“The new Christopher Turley Armed Force Community Hub offers a whole range of support and advice from the Council and our partners, accessible under one roof so people know where to go. Chris Turley

Let’s talk health A new way to look after ourselves

DID KN W

YOU

The flu vaccine prevented 96,000 to 120,200 hospitalisations in England during last winter. Source – UK Health Security Agency.

Looking after our health isn’t always simple and talking about it can be even harder. But a new campaign called ‘Healthy Conversations’ is all about making it easier to speak up about health concerns, whether it’s with a friend, a colleague, or a trusted professional.

The idea is simple. When we talk, we make better choices. And when those conversations happen in safe, everyday spaces, they can help break down the fear or embarrassment that often stops people from seeking support. The first subject up for discussion is flu vaccinations. Despite being free for many, uptake is still low in some groups. Healthy Conversations aims to change that by helping people understand why the flu jab matters – not just for people’s own wellbeing, but for the health of those around them too. By opening these conversations, the campaign hopes to build a healthier, more

connected community – one chat at a time. The campaign also highlights the importance of everyone taking responsibility – asking people to consider not just their own health, but of those around them. Whether it’s a colleague with a chronic condition or a neighbour undergoing treatment, small actions like getting vaccinated can make a big difference. The Council is urging everyone in Telford and Wrekin to take the first step: start a healthy conversation with a professional today. Whether it’s about flu, mental health, or lifestyle changes, talking is the beginning of living well.

“Flu can be serious, especially for vulnerable people and vulnerability isn’t always visible. By having a conversation, we can help each

other make informed decisions and reduce pressure on our local GPs and NHS services.” Councillor Kelly Middleton Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Public Health and Healthier Communities

that changed everything One check When Solwazi (Sol) Mthethwa popped into a community event, he didn’t expect to leave with life-saving information. “When they offered me a free blood pressure check, I thought, why not?” That quick decision revealed dangerously high blood pressure. Sol had no symptoms, no warning signs. “I felt fine! had no idea anything was wrong,” he said. “I’m so grateful someone caught it early – it really was a shock to me.” Sol’s story isn’t unusual. High blood pressure is the largest known risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and dementia and it rarely shows any symptoms. The only way to know if you have it, is to get checked. One in three people with high blood pressure don’t know they have it. Early detection saves lives A simple check can help prevent serious illness or even save your life. It puts you in control

Volunteers at the heart of the community The Council’s Health Champions are trained to take blood pressure

readings and talk to people about reducing their risk. Volunteers choose how often they help, and sessions last just two or three hours. Volunteers like Nithya and Julie are at the heart of the project. “It’s made me feel more confident and happier,” says Nithya. “I love seeing people connect over a coffee,” adds Julie. “It’s reminded me how important face-to-face contact is.”

Some of the Borough’s most historic buildings are being revitalised through Council investment including: The Gower, St Georges Formerly a community hospital for local miners, built in 1873, the Gower has served many purposes, including as a school and youth centre. Now it’s being converted into new community spaces, parish council offices and homes by the Council’s housing

Sweets Galore owners, John and Diane are about to move into a brand-new unit in Wellington Market “There’s always an element of risk with change, but we are really grateful to have a future and realise that if the refurbishment of the market isn’t done there won’t be a future – the market will die. “We’ve been here for 50 years, but our new gondola style stall will be one of those at the front and centre of the market.

The former YMCA building in Wellington once hosted a World Championship snooker match.

“The market is a very important part of the community in Wellington, and we’re pleased that the historic features of the building, which has stood here for centuries, are being restored.”

“We want these historic buildings to continue to have a place in our communities for a variety of different uses and we are pleased to see work progressing across these projects.”

Restoring pride in our high streets Local pride with national success

Residents in Telford and Wrekin are proud to shop local and it shows. With just 3.8% of retail units sitting empty across the borough, our towns are bucking the national trend, where vacancy rates hover around 14%. Support that makes a difference Since 2018, the Council’s Pride in Our High Street programme has awarded over 385 grants, helping 72 businesses set up shop and supporting many more to grow and adapt. Relaunched for 2025/26, the scheme offers a funding pot of £1.2

million, with tailored grants including: Start-up grants – up to £10,000 to help businesses move into empty high street units. Trial grants – up to £2,500 for pop- ups and market stalls. Façade grants – for refreshed signage, paintwork and shutters. Eco grants – for energy- saving products and sustainability upgrades. Digital grants – to boost online presence and efficiency.

One recent success is the Courtyard Cafe in Ironbridge, opened by Nick and Jenny Barratt with support from a start-up grant. “We’re very grateful to Telford & Wrekin Council,” they said. “It’s helped us kit out the café and cover key start-up costs.” A new chapter for Ironbridge Courtyard Cafe

Perfect for modern living

Nuplace at Station Quarter Show homes open this autumn, and reservations will open early in 2026 with apartments ready to move into in the spring.

Existing Nuplace tenants told us… Take the stress out of moving Earlier this year in a survey, nearly 90 per cent of tenants said they would recommend Nuplace homes. They said: “I love the spacious bedrooms, modern design and simplicity in the architecture.”

Nestled right on the edge of Telford Town Centre, a new housing development is taking shape. Offering the latest in contemporary urban living, Station Quarter, is one of the latest developments being brought forward by Nuplace and will offer a mix of apartments and houses.

The apartment block will be completed first and will be known as Denmark House featuring 84 one and two bedroom apartments for private rent when completed next year. Its central location offers the buzz of town centre living with bars, restaurants and shops all just a stone’s throw away. For a break from the hustle and bustle, the nearby award-winning Telford Town Park offers a peaceful green space to relax. Plus, with the train station just a short stroll away, getting in and out couldn’t be easier, perfect for commuters or weekend explorers. In a first for Nuplace, the apartments will be available fully furnished in a contemporary style, with the added benefit of concierge services. The development’s sustainability credentials stack up too, innovative technologies help reduce energy usage and costs alongside carbon emissions. Tenants will have access to EV charging points and all appliances throughout the building will be electric.

“We feel safe here and feel that it’s our own space to put a stamp on.”

“The best thing about our home would be how homely it feels. After many bad experiences with renting, Nuplace was so refreshing; reasonable rent, plenty of space and it has allowed us to feel at peace and as if it is our own home.”

“This is an incredibly exciting time with the apartments taking shape. This flagship scheme will provide high-quality town centre living, an ideal first home, relocation or downsize opportunities in a well-connected location.

This is the first phase in this development, with neighbouring homes due to be complete in early 2027. Visit www.nuplace.co.uk/stationquarter for full details.

“Our investment in this project underlines our commitment to providing essential new homes. It’s all part of our vision to protect, care and invest to create a better Borough, while ensuring our residents continue to pay the lowest Council Tax in the Midlands.” Councillor Richard Overton Telford & Wrekin Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Highways, Housing and Enforcement

Real families, real fun

At the heart of the campaign were six young storytellers who served as ambassadors for Telford.. Their unscripted voices spoke of climbing hills, exploring museums, and discovering new places. With support from local attractions and businesses, Visit Telford captured striking photography and content from climbing The Wrekin to stepping back in time at Blists Hill Victorian Town. As a result, a set of powerful, people-first visuals that have resonated with audiences locally and nationally. The campaign was rolled out on the Visit Telford website, social media channels, and across out of home adverts and digital screens all over the West Midlands. Looking ahead to autumn and winter with highlights including Christmas in Southwater and the Polar Express at Telford Steam Railway this inclusive approach will continue to shape future campaigns.

at heart of new national Visit Telford tourism campaign

This summer, Visit Telford the official destination management organisation for the Borough administered by the Council launched a bold seasonal campaign that places local people at the heart of its storytelling. The ‘Summer of fun’ campaign invited audiences to experience Telford through the eyes of its youngest residents. Narrated and animated by local children, it celebrates the Borough as a brilliant place to live, visit, and explore highlighting everything from great days out to memorable short breaks. Rather than using stock imagery or professional models, the Council’s tourism team cast real Telford families in a vibrant series of promotional content. This people-first approach ensures the campaign felt authentic and rooted in community showcasing Telford and Wrekin as a destination full of imagination, heritage, and heart.

Playful, polished, and proudly local Launched ahead of the summer holidays, the campaign invited families to ‘rule their summer’ in Telford, a place where every visitor could become the king, queen, or ruler of their own adventure. From ‘Queen of the Jungle’ at Exotic Zoo to ‘King of the Course’ at Telford Town Park’s mini golf, and ‘Ruler of the River’ paddleboarding through Ironbridge Gorge, the campaign spotlighted the Borough’s most beloved attractions in a playful and accessible way. The creative approach balanced high- quality production with the raw charm of local voices. Visuals, animations, and messaging were designed to feel fresh and fun, while still reflecting the professionalism and ambition of the Borough’s tourism strategy.

“Telford’s greatest strength is its people. This campaign shows real stories and smiling faces, helping our community take pride in where they live.”
