Totally Telford Magazine I E9 - Autumn 2025

In a bold step toward shaping a brighter future for its youngest residents, Telford & Wrekin Council has unveiled a vision to become a child friendly Borough, a place where every child feels safe, heard, and empowered to thrive. Earlier this year, the green light was given to ‘Child Friendly Telford and Wrekin’ which puts children and young people at the heart of everything the Council does. It’s not just about services, it’s about making sure their voices are heard, and their needs are reflected in decisions that shape their lives. This new approach builds on the Council’s strong track record, including back-to-back Outstanding Ofsted ratings for children’s social care. It also supports the goals set out in the Children and Young People Strategy. Putting young people at the heart of everything

What does child-friendly mean?

For children and young people to thrive they want to feel:

• Healthy • Heard • Safe • Achieving

• Independent • Happy • Surrounded by people they trust

New recruits To ensure children and young people are represented in services and decisions, four ‘Voice of the Child’ new apprentices have been recruited. One of them, Jamie Perkins said: “Having an apprenticeship with the Council has been life changing. It’s not just a job, it’s a chance to grow, to be heard, and to contribute to something bigger. “For someone like me, with

lived experience, it means the Council sees value in our voices and our potential. This opportunity shows that the Borough is serious about being child-friendly, not just in words, but in action. By investing in us, they’re building a future where young people are empowered, included, and supported to thrive.”
