Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Ambassadors
n This year our EDI Ambassadors were directly involved in presenting the major EDI events across the Junior School, helping particularly to raise knowledge and understanding about the terms ally and protected characteristics. In Michaelmas term, all the Ambassadors helped to launch Black History Month, with the theme of changemakers. Untold Stories and Hidden Histories were brought to the forefront and integrated into each year group’s curriculum: OA Ivan Shirley (Year 3); the Ghana Empire (Year 4); Black Victorians (Year 5) and the contribution of Black soldiers in World War 2 (Year 6). During February Pride Month, James H and Zander joined in some events across the College, including GeoExplorers Club and the Thrill of it all music exhibition. They then shared their reflections to the rest of the Junior School in a special assembly in particular about being an ally. “Being an ally means understanding, respecting and standing up for people’s differences.” (James H, Year 6) In the assembly to launch the International Women’s Week events, Teddy and Theo shared information about their inspirational women and their achievements: Rosa Parks and Teddy’s grandmother, showing that greatness can be found in our own homes. Finally Ambassadors Archimedes, Henry and James B launched Neurodiversity Week, inviting everyone to accept, respect and embrace everyone’s differences. Henry was especially busy as he impressively conducted several presentations across Year 4 about his own neurodivergence: dyslexia. “Neurodiversity Week raises awareness and understanding and might even help someone recognise their own strengths as well as their difficulties.” (Henry, Year 5) in March, To end the year, the EDI Ambassadors gave important input into evaluating the class books that are read across each year group to ensure the English curriculum is more diverse and inclusive. “I enjoyed helping change the curriculum to make Dulwich College a more diverse and inclusive place to learn.” (Theo, Year 4). We look forward to seeing some of these changes in the next academic year. The EDI Ambassadors should be proud of their achievements throughout the year. “Being an EDI Ambassador helped me learn about people’s differences so that we can be more open and make sure everyone can thrive.” (James B, Year 6)
