Junior Alleynian 2025

SPELLING BEE n The Spelling Bee: Live Final took place in the Lent term, and was a very competitive, tense and exciting event!

In the week before the Final, everyone took part in a spelling test in class. Then, the top speller in each year group for each House went through to the Live Final. Years 3 and 4 showed excellent spelling in the first half, followed by Years 5 and 6. Each Finalist had to spell three words out loud in front of the audience, increasing in difficulty for each time. One point was awarded for the first word, two points for the second, and three points for the third word. Then, the highest scorers went through to a head-to-head round. If someone then mis-spelt their word, they were out! Some of the trickiest words included ‘adolescent’, ‘hygiene’, ‘interfere’ and ‘collaborate’. Spelling words out loud, without writing them down, is a tricky skill. Miss Diamond, the judge, accepted the first attempt only, so it was extra nerve-wracking! I was the Year 6 Finalist for Drake, and luckily, I won for Year 6! In Year 3, the winning House was Drake, in Year 4 it was Marlowe, and in Year 5 it was Raleigh. Drake won overall – well done, Drake!

House Verse Speaking n On Tuesday 24 th June, the Junior School watched the finals of the House Verse Speaking. The day started off with Year 4 and Year 6. In Year 6, we saw some brilliant performances from Tommy, Caspar, and Xander, who all placed on the podium. In Year 4, we were astounded with the quality of all the performances and the following found their way onto the podium: Zakir, William and Dennis. Later in the day, we had Year 5 and 3 perform their poems and Iacopo stole the show in Year 3 with an astounding piece. In Year 5, we saw Ben perform his gripping MCavitie the Cat. Everybody who performed put in a great deal of effort and so did the Judges: Ms Johnson and Ms Ibbotson and Toby (the Senior School Wellbeing Prefect). We hope parents and pupils alike enjoyed hearing the winners perform their poems at Speech Day.
