CENTENNIAL BEACH Profile

The Aquatics division of the Recreation Department is responsible for the overall operations associated with the Centennial Beach aquatics facility. The Beach is supervised by one full-time Aquatics Manager who is assisted by numerous seasonal staff in the positions of managers, lifeguards, customer service representatives, swim lessons instructors, and swim team coaches. The Aquatics Manager is responsible for supervising Beach operations as well as managing the District’s indoor aquatics program offerings, the paddleboat, kayak, and paddleboard rental operation, and tours of the Millennium Carillon. Centennial Beach, originally developed in the early 1930s, is home to Naperville’s largest outdoor aquatics facility. Once a stone quarry, the “Beach” now holds 6.2 million gallons of water and has become a unique summer swimming destination for the community and surrounding areas. The budget for memberships and daily admissions was developed using a three-year average (2021/2022/2023). The facility opened Memorial Day weekend and closed Labor Day weekend in 2023. Membership sales met budgeted revenue, and daily admissions exceeded budget by 8% or $59,200. Overall attendance ended the year up by 8.0% compared to the three-year average.

Centennial Beach expenses are projected at 2.0% or $23,400 above budget due in large part to a significant increase in training expenses related to hiring 26 new lifeguards; however, the additional expenses were able to be offset by revenues which are projected 5.0% or $64,600 exceeding budget. The surplus for the facility is projected to exceed budget by 19.0% or $41,200. Overall, the aquatics programming at Centennial Beach experienced steady participation this past summer in swim lessons, swim team, and water aerobics. Participation numbers in 2023 were 955 compared to 960 in 2022 for swim lessons. The water fitness class had steady participation numbers with 12 more participants registered than in 2022. The Paddleboard Yoga program experienced continued growth from 98 participants in 2022 up to 109 in 2023 with many classes being sold out and additional paddleboards needing to be purchased to increase class capacities. The Mudrats swim team experienced substantial growth in their numbers, increasing from 103 participants in 2022 to 129 participants in 2023. Safety continues to be a top priority at Centennial Beach. The lifeguards scored an “Exceeds” on two out of three of this year’s lifeguarding audits, which is the highest possible score for the audits. The recruitment of lifeguards will continue to be a top priority during the off-season.

Lifeguard positions will be posted in November and all returning lifeguard staff will be reevaluated for a determination of rehiring. Lifeguard training will once again include pre-season conditioning in April to prepare any new candidates for lifeguard training in May. The 2024 budget includes staff wage increases of $1 per hour, which is a result of minimum wage increases and the need to recruit and retain staff required to operate the facility. To offset the rising wages, we will add a 5% increase on all memberships in addition to a daily fee rate adjustment of $1 for residents and $2 for non- residents. With these fee increases, the Centennial Beach is budgeted to achieve a surplus of $377,000 in 2024.
