2024 PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS: KNOCH KNOLLS PARK’S FRANK J. RUS PAVILION INSTALLATION AND SITE IMPROVEMENTS – The Frank J. Rus pavilion and site improvements are planned to be completed at Knoch Knolls Park in 2024 as a result of a generous donation in the amount of $250,000 from the Frank J. Rus Trust to assist with funding the project. The new pavilion will support the Park District’s outdoor educational and recreational programs and provide visitors to the park with an area to picnic in a beautiful, natural setting. The pavilion is proposed for the Upper Grove of Knoch Knolls Park, which is located on the south side of the DuPage River and accessible from the bicycle/ pedestrian bridge. In 2023, the Park District ordered the pavilion and storage structure and processed the necessary permits in preparation for project implementation in time for the 10th anniversary of the Knoch Knolls Nature Center planned for next year. RON ORY COMMUNITY GARDEN PLOTS SITE IMPROVEMENTS – Per the Site Master Plan developed in 2022 based on community input, the main gravel parking lot is slated to be converted to ADA-accessible permeable paver surfacing to better meet the needs of patrons who enjoy activities and programs onsite and at Knoch Park. Additionally, this project involves the installation of raised ADA garden beds and drainage improvements.
ROTHERMEL FAMILY SKATE FACILITY AT CENTENNIAL PARK – The original skate facility was developed in 2004 and recently identified for renovation due to heavy use and resulting wear and tear. In 2022, the Naperville Park District conducted an extensive community outreach initiative that involved skaters, neighbors, and other members of the community. The community input received in summer 2022 assisted the project team in formulating the final skate facility design in preparation for commencing construction in 2023. The final phase of project work consisting of a new plaza with shelter and site furnishings is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2024. The facility is slated to open for public use in summer 2024 with a ribbon- cutting event to unveil the new Rothermel Family Skate Facility at Centennial Park, funded in part by a very generous $125,000 grant from the Rothermel Family and the DuPage Foundation. PLAYGROUND RENOVATIONS/INSTALLATIONS – In 2024, the existing playgrounds at Arbor Way, Arrowhead Park, Central Park, Frontier Sports Complex (central location), Oakridge Parkway, South Pointe Park, Spring-Field Park, and Winding Creek Park are planned for renovation. Additionally, a playground is planned to be constructed at the new Polo Club Park, as well as multiuse fields and parking lots at the new Fairlane Farms Park once the properties are conveyed to the Naperville Park District as part of the Polo Club Subdivision.
GOLF COURSE IMPROVEMENTS – Phase II of the #18 Hole Green Complex Development project at Naperbrook Golf Course is planned for late spring of 2024. This portion of the project involves shifting the 18th hole at Naperbrook Golf Course to the new 18th green complex, which was completed in 2023. Work will then begin on the current 18th green, which will be reconfigured into the Marie Todd Practice Facility, adding new practice bunkers and chipping areas, plus a new berm and other features. It is expected that this phase will reach substantial completion before the end of 2024. Also planned for 2024 is the Naperbrook Golf Course Irrigation System Replacement project. This project is scheduled to begin in late summer 2024, and will replace the 34-year-old irrigation system, including all sprinkler heads, pipes and controllers. The new system, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year, will be able to more efficiently use valuable irrigation water throughout the golf course, helping to maintain premium course conditions while reducing breakdowns and leaking sprinklers that have become an issue with the current irrigation system. The planned Golf Course Improvements for 2024 will not involve any course closures. A complete list of planned capital projects for 2024 follows:
