sheet inspection system is “an absolutely critical feature,” says Blake. “It runs at maximum press speed, provides the ability to inspect every printed sheet, and notifies the press op- erator of possible errors,” says Blake. “Combined with our glue line inspection it allows us a minimum 200 percent inspection increase. For all work, it is invaluable when run- ning at high speed as an aide to the operator who cannot pull sheets fast enough to effectively sample the quality on the run.” Oliver has found that its QualiTronic System Brunner Instrument Flight has also become an indispensable tool. The inclusion of the QualiTronic Instrument Flight system makes Oliver one of the printers in the U.S. with this spe- cial capability that emphasizes color balance and gray balance, considering more than 30 process variables. For CMYK work it works flawlessly to G7 standards and reduc- es waste, Blake said. Blake admits that the Rapida 145 has contributed more profitability and growth into new market segments than was initially anticipated. “Our operators enjoy running the press at high speed because of the logistics, color control and inspection sys- tems,” he says. “It is a very reliable press offering the most output and best quality. Our future press purchases will be heavily influenced by the success we’ve experienced with our new Koenig & Bauer Rapida 145.” PCA To Pay $2.5 Million For Violating Clean Air Act At DeRidder Mill In LA The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Lake For- est, Illinois based Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) has agreed to pay $2.5 million in civil penalties to resolve allegations that it violated the Clean Air Act’s General Duty Clause and Risk Management Program Regulations at its containerboard production mill in DeRidder, Louisiana. The U.S. and the Louisiana Department of Environmen- tal Quality allege nine Clean Air Act violations in connec- tion with a fatal explosion and accidental release at the DeRidder mill on February 8, 2017. Three workers were killed and seven others were injured in the explosion. The blast caused property damage and released extremely hazardous substances into the environment. The EPA inspected the DeRidder mill after the explo- sion and uncovered additional violations. Under the Clean Air Act, facilities like PCA’s are required to identify hazards, design, and maintain a safe facility, minimize the conse- quences of accidental releases that do occur, and comply with regulatory prevention measures. Failing to comply with these requirements increases the risk of accidents and threatens surrounding communities. The proposed stipulation of the settlement is subject to a 45-day public comment period and court approval.
