January in Iowa can be brutal: freezing temperatures, icy winds, and snow that spits down out of the sky. But Iowans are a tough bunch, and nothing — not even bad weather — can hold us back from a party. That’s why the University of Okoboji Winter

Games is one of the state’s biggest events of the year! The fact that the games are held on a frozen lake is simply part of their charm.
Imagine a sports lover’s paradise wholly iced over and covered in snow. At Lake Okoboji, attendees can enjoy every outdoor and indoor winter sport imaginable on and around the lake. Traditional options include ice skating, broomball, flag football, and snow softball, but there are wackier things on offer, too, like “human foosball” and “snowga” (yoga in the snow)! Indoors, people compete in cribbage, pool, ax throwing, pickleball, volleyball, and pinochle. There’s always plenty of hot chocolate, coffee, and cider available — along with so much beer that several events are planned around the drink. The games also include a chili cook-off, fireworks, and plenty of live music. Darin and his family make a point to drive up to their lake house and attend almost every year. “You can get involved in everything from a cribbage tournament at the nursing home to snowmobile races and quad races on the lake or softball games on the lake. You name it, they have it all going on, and most of it takes place on the frozen lake somewhere and somehow!” Darin says. His family is partial to the Okoboji Winter Games Kite Festival, but they always hit multiple events — and you can, too. The 43rd annual University of Okoboji Winter Games will pop up on the lake from Thursday, Jan. 26–Sunday, Jan. 29 this year, so it’s not too late to plan your road trip or book a last-minute flight. After the chaos of the holidays, a weekend of good, old-fashioned fun and games might be exactly what you need.
