OCTOBER 2024

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA Can you believe it is already October! As you breathe in the crisp air and enjoy the beautiful fall foliage, this month sets the stage for reflection on the past year, winter preparation and importantly, in an election year, participation in our democracy. It’s a month that invites us to embrace the spirit of civic responsibility and consider the impact we can make on the world around us. We’re excited to premiere “The American Vice President” on October 1 at 8 pm. This new film from “American Experience” takes us back to a turbulent era in our nation's history, focusing on the years between 1963 and 1974. During this time, America, grappling with grief and scandal, was compelled to redefine the role of the vice president. The documentary delves into the passage of the 25 th Amendment, offering a fresh perspective on presidential succession. Of course, on the same evening, the nation will turn its eyes to the vice-presidential debate between Ohio Senator J.D. Vance and Minnesota’s own Governor Tim Walz. Be sure to stay tuned to “PBS News Hour” for the insightful coverage you rely on. October is also known as the spookiest month of the year, when the wind begins to howl, and the shadows grow longer. Just in time for Halloween, we have two thrilling programs lined up for you on October 30. At 7 pm, “Nature” will take you deep into Romania’s Carpathian Mountains in “Dracula’s Hidden Kingdom,” revealing a world where ancient forests remain untouched, and wildlife thrives in what is one of Europe’s last true wildernesses. Then, at 9 pm, “Secrets of the Dead” presents “Field of Vampires,” which uncovers chilling burial practices from centuries past, exploring the mysterious life — and death — of a woman believed to be a vampire. As we look ahead, October 21-27 marks National Estate Planning Awareness Week. This is a time to think about the legacy you wish to leave behind. By including TPT in your estate plan, you help to ensure that we continue to serve future generations. Our Giving Team is here to assist you at 651.229.1410 or giving@tpt.org.

Twin Cities PBS Launches New Education Website TPTLearn.org provides free personal development and media resources for educators and learners.

Our new website meets these needs by providing an archive of resources that are accessible through a powerful search engine that categorizes our content by grade level, subject, and key words. Whether you’re looking for a video clip or a PDF activity guide, we’ve also included the ability to categorize resources by media type. Our goal is for educators to spend less time searching for quality resources and more time sharing with their learners. “The search engine will help them find exactly what they need for the topics of their choosing and the learners in their programs." - Niki Beverely, project manager for the Lifelong Learning team

Twin Cities PBS is excited to launch TPTLearn.org, a website dedicated to sharing free education resources with teachers and families. Designed as a one-stop shop, our new website is home to multimedia resources from your favorite TPT shows. These resources are designed for all learning environments including classrooms, out-of-school programs, and at home. Throughout the process of creating our new education website, our team listened closely to educators to best understand how a platform like this could benefit how they teach. There were many common themes that continually surfaced. Teachers wanted access to high-quality media that is entertaining and informative. Teachers wanted an experience where they could quickly find resources that are relevant to their subject area and grade level. Teachers wanted supplementary materials that could be quickly adapted to fit their environment.

As our station continues to produce new programs and education content, our website will evolve alongside them. Our team is dedicated to curating collections of resources relevant to current events and to updating our resources to meet the needs of the ever-changing education landscape.

What is TPT Passport? TPT Passport is a benefit for members who give $60 or more annually: one that requires a username and password (which you can create by going to TPT.org/sign-in and setting up an account) that you use to log in to TPT.org or the PBS App to watch additional episodes of your favorite TPT shows. Whether you’re on the site or in the app, you’ll notice a small compass symbol in the corner of the show image. That’s your invitation to watch a show that’s only available to members. How can I access shows within Passport on my SmartTV? By using the PBS App! Download the app from the app store, and use your TPT Passport credentials to log in and gain access to extended programming. Why do I need to log in for some shows and not for others? Financial Tips for Never-Married Couples By Lucy Lazarony

The number of men and women between 65 and 74 who have chosen to live together without tying the knot has more than doubled in the last decade, Census data show. Older couples who decide to share a home must face problems that young people do not, such as merging established families. There is also the matter of money. Research at the University of Denver found that financial problems were the fifth most-often cited reason for divorce. A candid dialogue now about earning, saving, investing and spending may help you and your partner avoid a stormy battle down the road.

Consider these money tips from professional financial advisers:

"If you are never going to marry, you need to get your estate plan and documents in place,” says Jay Zigmont, a financial planner in Mount Juliet, Tennessee. "If you want your partner to be involved in your decision making, you will need to list them as your medical power of attorney, financial power of attorney and executor.” "If you don't have a piece of paper stating your wishes, government and health care organizations may look to your next of kin instead of your partner," Zigmont cautions. "Make sure your partner is listed as your beneficiary in your accounts and wills, otherwise they may get nothing.”

Plan Household Finances Talk over who will pay for what in your merged household. Cover every financial aspect of your home, from public utilities and streaming services to plumbers' bills and property taxes. "Things like homes, vehicles, rent or mortgage payments, utilities and the like can all have legal and tax consequences when it comes to who owns them and who is paying for them, especially when filing as a single taxpayer," says Ryan Johnson, a financial planner in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Knowing what your partner will — and won't — pay for will reduce stress in the relationship.

Once you have all your papers in order, review them every three to five years.

Establish an Estate Plan You should give serious thought to having your partner listed on your medical and financial documents.

Has ‘Anti-Aging’ Aged Out? By Ashley Milne-Tyte

During the pandemic Nancy Griffin was stuck at home like so many others. A 30-year veteran of the spa industry, she was eager to explore what it means to age well. She began a podcast where she interviewed experts in aging. As the months ticked by, one topic came up over and over again: ageism, and how many of her guests were feeling it in their daily lives. Griffin began to ponder the part her industry played in the problem. "The spa industry became hijacked by beauty in a big way," she says. "Beauty, skincare and procedures became a huge part of it."

"Companies are doing this because that's what customers want. They are catering to the desire to look youthful," says Hyder. When Next Avenue readers were invited to weigh in on this topic via the newsletter, most respondents said they were “anti anti-aging.” "I believe in being proactive with regard to my health and wellness in a holistic manner but have no interest in worrying about a few wrinkles or denying my true age," wrote one. "I openly share my age because I want people to know what 73 looks like … trying to look younger than you are is prejudice against your future self." Another reader wrote: "I do not buy anti-aging products because I want to continue aging as long as possible."

"The spa industry became hijacked by beauty in a big way."

The underlying message, she says, was that you're not aging well if you don't slather on a slew of products or start injecting yourself with fillers. She says for an industry that was supposed to be about wellness and helping people, there was a lot of shaming going on. Last year she launched the website Expose Ageism to encourage spa and beauty companies "to eliminate ageist stereotypes in their marketing and operations," beginning with the words "anti-aging." According to data website Statista, the anti- aging market for beauty products is worth over $60 billion a year worldwide. Shama Hyder, CEO of marketing company Zen Media, says nixing the term "anti-aging" is a lofty goal, but it's not realistic.
