will cease when He returns (see Isa. 2:4; Mic. 4:34; Psa. 72:7-16). * * * S id e -L ig h t s I know a man who in the weekly prayer-meeting was always confessing the same things. His prayer was seldom varied: “O Lord, since we last gathered together, the cobwebs have come be tween us and Thee. Clear away the cob webs that we may again see Thy face.” One day a brother called out, “O Lord God, kill the spider 1” You know very well that you may sweep the cobwebs away, but if you leave spiders in the room you will have cobwebs again to morrow morning. The best way to get rid of the cobwebs is to deal with the cause, to kill the spider. That is exactly what Jesus Christ did when He died on the Cross. He not only dealt with the ef fect, but He dealt with the very cause of sinning. A Bedouin with his keen, watchful eye, discerned a speck moving in the distance over the desert. Loading his rifle, he gripped it tight, ready for action. Pres ently he saw that the approaching figure was a member of his own tribe. His grasp on the weapon relaxed, and when, a little later, he saw that the tribesman was his own brother, he dropped the rifle and resumed his peaceful occupation. So the nations of the earth will some day abandon their murderous weapons of war when they see one another more closely and realize that they are “all of one blood.” During the dark days of the struggle for Italian liberty, the people generally looked upon Garibaldi as their invincible deliverer. Prisoners, hurried away to loathsome dungeons, would be cheered as they passed along the streets by friends whispering in their ears, “Courage ! Gari baldi is coming!” Men would steal out at night and chalk on the walls and pave ments, “Garibaldi is coming!” And when the news of his approach near to a city was announced, the people broke out into the rapturous shout, “Garibaldi is com ing !” He came, and Italy broke her po litical and religious fetters, never to be so enslaved again. A greater than Gari baldi is coming to God’s people. The Desire of all nations is on the way. Jesus is coming, coming to reign, and His king dom is joy, peace, blessing eternal. — H. O. Mackey.

it well with the home? The Outlook is responsible for this statement: One who has had a wide experience in working for boys and young men in reformatories and penitentiaries, recently made the state ment publicly that he had yet to find the inmate of a penal institution who had had, in his childhood, a happy home. Out of 268 boys committed to the Lyman School for boys at Westboro, Massachu setts, during the year 1908, 101 had lost both parents. The report of the reform- school population of the United States gives seventy-five per cent orphans or semi-orphans. Evidently nothing can take the place of the normal home in which both parents are living.— Rev. Robert B. McCain. —o— May 18, 1930 What Are th e Causes of War? There are many manifesta tions of sin which we term “sins” that contribute to the causes of war, such as selfish desires, selfish efforts, covetous ness, etc. This is taught in the passage assigned for this lesson, which, however, has nothing to do with the wars of na tions, but, as the context clearly teaches, deals with social contentions. Disputing was the besetting sin of the Jewish race, and for this reason the writers of the Epistles were led of the Spirit to warn believers of this sin which worked havoc in the family, business, social, church, and national life of the people. Satan, the father of sin and all of its terrible consequences, is still “prince of the power of the air” and “goeth about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.” But, praise God, he is fighting a losing battle and his time is short. Though God, in His great scheme to save mankind, permitted Satan to bruise the heel of the Redeemer in His death upon the Cross, yet Christ will, at His coming, bruise the head of Satan and banish sin from the presence of the earth (see Gen. 3:15; Rom. 16:20; Heb. 10:37).
