King's Business - 1930-04

April 1930 April 27— “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Rom. 12:2). The world’s great difficulty is that it sees so few of us who are in any appreci able, recognizable degree like Jesus Christy — Dr. Stuart Holden. There is not one of us who does not de sire to be Christlike. We know the most powerful influence in the world is the Christlike life, but you can only have this Christlike character as you are filled with God’s Holy Spirit, and the Spirit bears His fruit in you. Is He bearing His fruit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance? Is that the impression that you are making upon those with whom you live day by day? Are you willing to be filled with God’s Holy Spirit that you may be Christlike? ^ R e v . W. H. Aldis. As some rare perfume, in a vase of clay, Pervades it with a fragrance not its own, So, when Thou dwellest in a mortal soul, All heaven’s own sweetness seems around it thrown. ■— H. B. Stowe. ' ..riAn-Av April 28— “Lo, I die : in my grave . . . in the land o f Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. . . . . And Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of. Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, and all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father’s house” (Genesis 50:5, 7, 8). God’s love followed even Jacob’s dead body, in the same way that it had en-

riched him all through his life. Jacob askfed simply that he be allowed to sleep with his fathers in his homeland. God not only granted his request, but made it the occasion of honoring him far be yond anything that he had asked. God never can stop with merely meeting our right desires. He goes lavishly beyond them. Ask or expect what we will of Him, He always does better; We have never asked enough. We never can, in this life: He will always better it. That is His purpose, His joy. Not only of tith ing, but of all our relationship with Him, He keeps saying: “Prove me now here with, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to re ceive it.” You have seen the graphic ar rangement that has been made of His Word through Pau l: All that we ask. All that we ask or think. Abundantly above all that we ask or think. Exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think. According to the power that worketh in us. Oh, that we would just press on in ever bolder measure, with our requests, into the heart of God! Ask, He says; ask, ask, ask; and ye shall receive—but always more than you ask. —Messages for the Morning Watch. — o — April 29— All your days ye shall dwell in tents” (Jer. 35:7). We are not called upon, like the Recha- bites, to live in tents literally; but spir itually the Christian will dwell in a tent

all his days. Tent life is the life for travelers and explorers, and we are mere ly making our way through the wilder ness of this world to our permanent home in heaven. But many do not look at life in this way at all. The Son of man had not where to lay His head, but they must have a rosewood bed with silken fittings. Abraham dwelt in tents. MoSes lived in tents. Our Lord Jesus Christ virtually spent His life in tents. All the truly great have done the same thing, have been in the world but not of it, have just been passing through. For as soon as we become more than sojourners, as soon as we begin to strike our roots in the soil, progress toward heaven becomes impos sible for us. April 30— “Let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not” (Gal. 6:9). The Cross not only calls us to fight, but shows the ground on which we can stand with every hope of success. Recog nizing that Calvary spells victory, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit we learn how to put that victory into practice over natural weaknesses and supernatural evil forces. Nothing will prove the value of prayer so fully as to understand that the oppo sition of the powers of evil is not a fic tion, and that the only provision for vic tory resides in the risen Saviour, as the Holy Spirit makes practical in us and through us the power of His triumph on the Cross. May we not be found wanting in the hour when God calls us to stand! — Rev. Gordon B. Watt.
