A Busy Summer for Our Office

Moving Day Is Finally Here

Though we’re all looking forward to moving into the new office, we’ve been lucky

enough to close out our old one with some big successes. Vicki has recently resolved a number of six- figure personal injury cases, including one for over $300,000. Personally, I was

able to successfully petition the state to

remove restrictions on someone who has posed no threat to society for a number of years. It was

the first successful petition of its kind, and it felt good to make such a significant difference in this person’s life.

“It’s been a long process, but I’m excited that our new home is almost ready. It will allow us to provide even better service to our clients, which is always our ultimate goal.”

We’ve also been clearing out shelves and removing clutter in anticipation of

transitioning to the new office. It’s been a long process, but I’m excited that our new home is almost ready. It will allow us to provide even better service to our clients, which is always our ultimate goal. Furthermore, this move will give us a chance to get every last detail in order, from the systems to the cabinets.

is that he gets free travel from any military airfield. Recently, he flew on a cargo plane from Charleston to Spain. He spent some time on a naval base there and traveled around both Spain and Portugal. He had a great time on the trip, and I think having him gone for 10 days ended up being

a vacation for my mother as well.

Speaking of organized shelves, Father’s Day is coming up in June. That might seem like an odd segue, but I promise it makes sense. During his career, my dad, Ross, ran and operated a series of grocery stores where the shelves were pristine. His work ethic could best be described as tireless. Most days, he left to open the supermarket at 7 a.m. and didn’t come home until 9 p.m. Our attorney, Vicki Koutsogiannis, observed the same behavior in her father, Jimmy, who still owns and operates the Twin Palmetto restaurant. I think seeing your father leave before the sun comes up and get home after it goes down really instills a work ethic in someone, and that’s certainly true of Vicki. In addition to working long hours at his supermarkets, my dad served as a member of the Army National Guard. How he found the time for all of this is something I’m still trying to figure out, but he managed it. He’s retired now, and one cool benefit of his National Guard service

I’m looking forward to spending Father’s Day with my dad, as well as with Lee’s father, Frank. Frank ran a fence installation company during his working days, but he’s now retired. I always enjoy the time I get to spend with Lee’s family, which upends the old cliché about in-laws. I

guess we should consider ourselves lucky that we all enjoy each other’s company so much. I hope everyone has a wonderful Father’s Day this year. I also hope you’ll come say hi when we move into the new office. – Jim Snell

Audiobooks Inspire a Love of Stories in All Ages

Summer Reading for Busy Families

FOR FAMILY BONDING “Half Magic” by Edward Eager, read by Words Take Wing

Summer reading lists are always popular, but most families rarely have time to have dinner together, let alone sit still reading for hours. Luckily, the

A beloved family favorite since it was first published in 1954,“Half Magic” tells the story of siblings Jane, Mark, Katharine, and Martha, who discover a magic wish-granting coin. They soon realize the coin only grants half of what they wish for, and an unplanned vacation to the Sahara, followed by chaos in King Arthur’s court, is just a one of the hilarious misadventures this family must overcome together.

ever-growing popularity of audiobooks means you don’t have to wait for school to start again for your kids to get back into literature. Here are a few great audiobooks you can introduce to your

family this summer.

When lonely robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she finds she’s trapped on a wild island. Struggling to survive and befriend the island’s hostile animal inhabitants, Roz must eventually face her mysterious past, which threatens to tear her home apart. This brand- new book is a stunning tale about the environment, technology, and the wonder of being alive. These are just a few of the many titles your family can enjoy this summer. Find even more by visiting Audible.com or checking the audiobooks catalogue on iTunes.

FOR THE LONG ROAD TRIP “The Bad Beginning” (A Series of Unfortunate Events) by Lemony Snicket, read by Tim Curry When a terrible fire destroys the Baudelaire mansion, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny find themselves orphans and are sent to live with the terrible Count Olaf. Convinced their awful new guardian is only after their fortune, the Baudelaires must use their intelligence and skills to stick together and (maybe) overcome their sad circumstances. Fans of the Netflix series will love to hear the story that started it all! Who knew such an unfortunate series could mean fun for the whole family?

We recently participated in the 17th annual Kid’s Day of Lexington, and it was a huge success. The event benefits local charities, and it’s also an opportunity for local businesses to provide a day of family fun to our community. Attendance this year was over 20,000, and seeing everyone come out was a reminder of what a vibrant city we live in. Our table was busy from the beginning of the event right up until the end. We handed out over 1,000 slap bracelets and enough candy for several Halloweens. The biggest hit, though, was the balloon artist we hired from Greenville. Kids lined up from the moment the air filled the first balloon. Honestly, we weren’t sure if we made the right call, but in hindsight, it’s easy to say we did. The artist was friendly, and her creations were truly impressive. She twisted up

everything from elephants to foxes, and watching her work was just as cool as seeing the finished product. It means a lot to us to be able to contribute to such a fun day and to raise money for worthy causes like the Nancy K. Perry Children’s Shelter and the Dickerson Center for Children. Given how well the day went, we’re excited to take part in future Kid’s Days. We want to thank all of the other local businesses who participated and the wonderful people of Lexington for making the event so special. It’s so important to our team at the Law Office of James R. Snell to give back to the place we call home. We’ll see you next year, and we’ll bring two balloon artists to cut down on the lines!

Defending Those Charged With Criminal Domestic Violence When the Finger Is Pointed

Criminal domestic violence (CDV) is one of the most heavily policed and prosecuted crimes in the state of South Carolina. It’s important that every domestic violence call be reported, because without support, the situation is only going to get worse. Problems arise, though, when accusations are made falsely or vindictively. If you’ve been wrongly accused of domestic violence, you deserve to have your story heard and your name cleared. The criminal defense team at The Law Office of James R. Snell Jr. understands that just because someone has been charged with domestic violence does not mean they are guilty of any wrongdoing. It’s a sad fact that some cases stem from a partner trying to gain an advantage in divorce proceedings, or a police call made in anger as retribution. Due to the nature of domestic violence, police officers often feel that they have to make an arrest on every domestic disturbance call, regardless of whether there’s probable cause. Once a domestic violence case has been initiated, it can be easy for things to get blown out of proportion. If you don’t retain the help of an experienced defense attorney, it’s easy to end up with serious charges that you don’t

rightfully deserve to be facing. Appearing alone in court can lead to you losing your rights or being pressured into a situation against your best interests. Being wrongly accused of domestic violence can be a traumatic experience, and you need an attorney who will treat the process from a legal, rather than emotional, perspective. James R. Snell Jr. has written a book that serves as a resource for those accused of and charged with criminal domestic violence. It’s called “Challenging CDV,” and it will help guide you through a difficult, complicated legal process. If you would like a free copy of the book, please call our office at 888-301-6004.

How to Celebrate the Longest Day of the Year

We call the summer solstice the “longest day of the year,” and though there aren’t really more hours in the day, extended hours of sunlight do make June 21 feel longer. So, why not do something with that extra light? We can’t all make a pilgrimage to Stonehenge to watch the sunrise, but there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the summer solstice wherever you live. TRY OUTDOOR YOGA Yoga is a popular activity for exercise and stress relief, practiced by millions across the world. The International Day of Yoga is held on June 21 each year. Expert and beginner yoga enthusiasts alike celebrate by taking their yoga mats outside. Find ways to get involved by visiting idayofyoga.org. CATCH SOME WAVES The summer solstice also happens to fall right after International Surfing Day, so why not enjoy the extra hours of sun by road

tripping out to the beach to catch some waves? The official International Surfing Day website, surfrider.org/isd, has lots of information and lists great ways to celebrate. You might even be surprised to find awesome events near you! SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK The week surrounding the summer solstice is often referred to as midsummer. William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” takes its name from this, so what better way to mark the occasion than with some of the Bard’s classic works? Theater groups all across the country put on outdoor performances, and it’s a wonderful chance for the community to come out and enjoy some of literature’s greatest stories. There are numerous celebrations surrounding the summer solstice. So why waste a sunny day? Get out there and have some fun!
