The Silent Struggle

attempt to view porn, the accountability partner(s) you have chosen will be con- tacted. You want to make it very protec- tive and difficult to get around, so the best is to have your accountability part- ner install the apps on your devices, so you do not know the password to access them and turn them off. Yes, I know men who have done that, so the app becomes worthless. Here is how I do it. 1). I never go on the internet without my wife by my side. 2). My wife is the only person that knows the password to Canopy. 3). My wife and my pastor are my accountability partners and will be notified if I try to get around the porn-blocking app. Some put up flimsy boundaries that they can straddle at will, with one foot on either side of the fence. Boundaries, to be effective, should be an impenetrable fortress.
Recently, I re- ceived just the second criticism of my book ‘Stand Firm — From the Dark- ness of Pornog-
raphy and Sexual Sin into the Light of God’s Grace.’ The first criticism was the book contained too many refer- ences to the Bible. I never have regret- ted directing the book to the Church and those who claim to be Christ fol- lowers and using God’s Word to direct our path to freedom from sexual sin. After this past year’s Barna Report, “The Church’s Silent Struggle,” reveal- ing that 75% of Christian men and 40% of Christian women struggle with porn
point out, what is going on inside our head is the major factor. We are led astray by seductive dress and words, persuasive words and smooth talk. What are we to do? “Store up God’s commands within you. Do not let your heart turn to the wayward person’s ways, don’t even stray into their path.” Proverbs 7:2 &23. In other words: AT ALL COSTS AVOID ANY CONTACT WITH THE WAY- WARD PERSON! No matter where they are, if we do “we lack judgment.” A good number of Bible-believing Christians have no idea what a boundary is. Unless it is like the goal line in a football game and the object is to cross it as many times as you can. And if something bad happens because I have no boundaries, it must be someone or something else’s fault. Like the guy who went off the road, on a curve marked at 25 miles per hour. He was driving 70 miles per hour. He was angry the county highway department had not put up a guardrail. No clue that he should have obeyed the speed limit. The same lack of living out the boundaries that God has put in place for us apply to porn too. It is not the source that is the prob- lem. Swimsuit or lingerie ads, magazine porn, porn shop porn, gentleman’s clubs, (aka. strip joints), fantasy porn, or internet porn — the question is, what are you doing there? “Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths. Many are the victims she has brought down; her slain are a mighty throng. Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death.” Proverbs 7: 23-27. The warning, from God’s Word could not be more clear. My book covers how to burn bridges to your sources, set bound- aries and how to enforce your boundaries with divine power. I am not going to re-write all that in this short article, but I encourage you to get the book if you want to stop porn use in your life. There
use, I know that my aim was not off. Since my book is directed at the Church and Christians therein, it is still an outstanding re- source to use the divine power of God to crush the Satanic-in- spired desire to use porn in any way. The second criticism, very recently, proclaimed my failure to ad- dress the use of internet porn. Internet porn was not really a factor in my story of porn addiction. I really don’t think it would have made too much of a difference. But I will say some things about internet porn in this article. With most of the recovering addicts I know, the source of the porn was not the major factor. The mental addiction is the major factor. “I need a sexual experience and I am power- less to stop the compulsion and obsession until I get it.” An ad- vertisement in a magazine, that is not even intended to be sexual, can provide all that is necessary for an addict to fantasize and make up a pornographic encounter. Walking down the street and seeing a person dressed in revealing clothing can trigger the com- pulsion and obsession to do more with him or her, either in fantasy or in reality. There was no internet porn during Old Testament times, but the draw to have sexual experiences outside of mar- riage was still there, as the young man of Proverbs 7 is drawn to the sexy woman dressed as a prostitute. “She is a highway to the grave and many have been slain by her.” Proverbs 7-9 are chap- ters that address the out-of-control pursuit of illicit sex and can definitely be used to address the use of porn today. The sources of the wayward woman, or man, are not the impor- tant factor. The Scripture tells us she is loud and defiant, she is everywhere, in the street, in the squares, at every corner she lurks. In today’s terms the wayward woman or man is everywhere, loudly calling out, in the street, at the grocery store, the department store, the mall, at work and even at church. But they are a highway to the grave and their slain are a mighty throng. As the Proverbs
For 28 years, I battled to stop viewing porn. One foot on either side of the fence. At 38 years old, I realized I was constantly com- mitting adultery and practicing idolatry. I was worshiping the god of pornography and had walked away from the One True God. I had to decide which master I would serve. “No servant can serve two masters, you will either love the one and hate the other or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and porn.” Luke 16:13. Another eye opener for me was 1 Corinthians 10:21-22. “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too. You cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.” When I made that decision, to serve only God and His Word, the one true God came to me and has been at my side, leading me to 30+ years of freedom from porn. He was looking for me, to be loyal to Him, so He could show Himself strong on my behalf. 2 Chronicles 16:9. He is looking for you too. I became loyal to God’s Word and He came and did for me what I was never able to do for myself. He freed me from an out-of-control addiction and dependance on porn. His power reaches to all the sources of porn and beyond to the triggers that can draw us to any and all the sources. I have written this before, but it deserves repeating. I stopped taking “sobriety pins” after 5 years. The pins belong to God. This July, He gets his 33-year pin. Thank you, Lord. Make the decision. Choose this day, who you will serve. Turn your back on the wayward woman or man, avoid them at all costs, at any and every location, look to God’s Word to enforce your boundaries and the Lord God Himself will come and help you to be strong and courageous because He will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9. My most recent critic also said my book didn’t make the reader deal with the sin of porn. I really scratch my head on that one. Jesus did tell people to go and sin no more after He forgave them. Two words Jesus did use and were common in the calling of sinful disciples, “Follow Me.” My book is all about following Jesus out and away from the bondage of habitual sin to a life living in His promises. Nowhere in my book will you learn to merely say words of repentance but you will learn to be transformed by the renewal of your mind and live out the heart change of repentance through following Jesus. are some other tools available today that can be very helpful in establishing boundaries, if you have to use the internet. Pornographers are very good at the abuse of the internet and using very high-tech ap- proaches to soliciting new converts to their abuse sites. The older of two apps you can put on your de- vices is called “Covenant Eyes.” The app will blur flesh tones. It will also contact whoever you have cho- sen as an accountability partner to inform them if you are looking at porn. The newer app, which I think bet- ter, is called “Canopy.” The app is only about $9.00 per device and will block 99% of porn sites. It will also blur flesh tones on the soliciting pop ups.
