Dufton Pike offers breathtaking views worthy of a much higher mountain. For a fairly easy climb, you are rewarded with panoramic vistas over the Eden Valley, the Howgills, and the North Pennines. On a clear day, you might even see as far as the Lake District! Starting from the village of Dufton, where there is a convenient car park, the walk up Dufton Pike is about 4 miles long. The trail crosses through farmland and open countryside, including enclosed lanes where you can let your dog off the lead. Just be sure to keep dogs on a lead when around livestock.

The Appleby and Riverside and Castle Loop is a delightful circular walk from Appleby-in- Westmorland and offers a perfect mix of riverside paths, picturesque countryside, and historic landmarks, making it an ideal 3 mile stroll. Starting at Boroughgate, Appleby’s main street, head towards Appleby Castle, a historic site with a rich history dating back to the 12th century. Enjoy views of the castle as you pass by and make your way down to the River Eden. Follow the path along the riverbank, enjoying the scenery and local wildlife. Cross Jubilee Bridge and pause to take in the view of the river. As you loop back towards Appleby, you’ll pass by Holme Farm, offering a glimpse of rural life. Finally, return to Boroughgate, completing your circular walk. Points of interest along the way include Appleby Castle, with its Norman keep and medieval hall, and the River Eden, known for its clear waters and excellent fishing spots. Jubilee Bridge offers picturesque views of the surrounding area, while Holme Farm showcases the pastoral beauty of the Eden Valley. This walk is relatively flat and suitable for all fitness levels, providing a wonderful way to explore the natural beauty and historical charm of Appleby-in-Westmorland.
