North Burscough Circular is a 9km circular trail near Ormskirk, ideal for those seeking a moderately challenging outdoor adventure. Starting from Burscough Bridge train station, this popular route takes around 2 hours, making it perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and running enthusiasts. The trail meanders through picturesque farm fields before joining the scenic towpath along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. As you wind through New Lane and the surrounding farmlands, you can enjoy a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. While this walk is accessible year round, it’s particularly beautiful during quieter times of the day, offering solitude and wildlife spotting. Be mindful of some sections that traverse roads and paths that can become muddy in wetter conditions, so appropriate footwear is recommended. This charming trail offers a delightful mix of canal side scenery and countryside vistas.
Ormskirk and Burscough Priory Circular is another pleasant circular route around 10k in total. You will meander through the surrounding fields and linking the ruins of Burscough Priory with Lathom Chapel. It should take around 2hrs 20 minutes to complete. The walk starts along Abbey Lane and leads you past Burscough Priory, which was founded in 1189; when dissolved in 1536. These days, only ruins remain. You’ll head across the open fields and rolling hills, and sections of woodland along the way, crossing Abbey Brook on your way to Latham Park Chapel. The Chapel was built in 1500 and is in a conservation area with the ‘Cromwell’s Stone’ near the entrance. Continue by following Cranes Lane through the fields, crossing the New Park Brook twice as you make your way back to the trailhead. Some of the paths can be quite muddy at times, so appropriate footwear is recommended.
