IGCSEs and BTECs at KS4

What is an IGCSE?

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a globally recognized qualification that serves as an excellent foundation for further academic study and future career pathways. Designed to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, the IGCSE encourages students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of each subject. The IGCSE is widely respected by universities and employers around the world, making it a strong stepping stone toward your future goals. At ICS Amman, our IGCSE programmes span two years, beginning in Year 10 and culminating in exams at the end of Year 11. During this time, you will study a combination of core and optional subjects, ensuring a solid foundation while allowing you to tailor your education to your interests and aspirations. IGCSE Grading The IGCSE grading system has evolved over recent years to align with international standards and provide greater clarity on students' performance. Traditionally, IGCSEs were graded using a letter-based system (A*–G). However, most IGCSE subjects are now graded using a numbered scale from 9 to 1, with 9 being the highest grade and 1 being the lowest. This change to a numbered system aims to provide more differentiation among high-performing students, especially at the top end of the scale. Here’s how the numbered grades compare to the old letter grades:

06

What is a BTEC?

The Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) qualification is a practical, skills-based alternative to traditional academic qualifications like IGCSEs and A Levels. BTECs focus on real-world application and hands-on learning, making them an excellent choice for students who thrive in coursework-based environments and are interested in pursuing specific career pathways. BTECs are designed in collaboration with industry professionals to ensure students gain the knowledge and skills that are most relevant to the workplace. They combine theoretical understanding with practical assignments, such as projects, presentations, and work-related tasks. This approach allows students to develop key skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and communication, while also mastering technical or vocational knowledge in their chosen field.

Where everyone can thrive!

07

How Do BTECs Work?

Assessment: Unlike IGCSEs, which are largely exam-based, BTECs are assessed through a combination of coursework, assignments, and in some cases, practical exams or controlled assessments. Levels: BTECs are available at different levels, from introductory Level 1 to advanced Level 3 qualifications, which are equivalent to A Levels. At ICS Amman, we typically offer BTECs at Levels 2 and 3, depending on the subject. Subjects: BTEC qualifications are available in a wide range of subjects, including Business, IT, Sport, and Creative Media. These courses allow students to explore their interests in depth and gain relevant experience for higher education or employment.

Why Choose a BTEC?

BTECs are ideal for students who prefer continuous assessment to end-of-course exams and enjoy applying their knowledge to real- world scenarios. They are widely respected by universities and employers alike, making them a versatile option for students looking to progress to higher education, apprenticeships, or directly into the workforce.

Where everyone can thrive!

08

Choosing Your Year 10 Subjects

Selecting your Year 10 subject choices is an exciting opportunity to shape the next stage of your education. At ICS Amman, we understand that every student is unique, and there is no one-size-fits- all pathway. Your interests, strengths, and aspirations should guide your choices, and we are here to support you in making the best decisions for your future. For some students, a combination of IGCSEs and BTECs provides the perfect balance of academic and practical learning, while others may choose to focus on two BTECs to develop specific vocational skills. Both pathways are equally valued and open doors to exciting opportunities in further education and beyond.

When making your choices, consider:

Your Interests: Which subjects excite and motivate you? Your Strengths: Where do you feel most confident in your abilities? Your Future Goals: What subjects align with your aspirations for post-16 education or a potential career? Remember, there is no "right" or "wrong" combination—what matters is finding the pathway that works for you. Our team of teachers, tutors, and pastoral leaders is here to guide you through the process, answer your questions, and ensure you feel confident in your decisions.

Together, we’ll help you create a balanced and fulfilling subject selection that sets you on the path to success.

Where everyone can thrive!

Looking Ahead to Post-16 Education

While Post-16 education may feel like a distant milestone, it is important to consider your longer term goals when selecting your Year 10 IGCSE/ BTEC subjects. The choices you make now lay the foundation for your future Post-18 studies and career aspirations. Achieving positive outcomes in your IGCSEs will open up a wider range of pathways at Post-16, including A Levels, BTECs, and other qualifications that will align with your interests and strengths. By choosing a balanced combination of subjects that reflect your passions and ability, you will be better positioned to succeed, and have the flexibility to pursue pathways that matter most to you. Keep your future aspirations in mind and do not hesitate to seek advice from your teachers or the Options Team.

Examination fees

While ICS Amman provides extensive support to ensure students are fully prepared for their IGCSE and BTEC assessments, it is important to note that the costs associated with BTEC Registration and Examination entry fees are not covered by the school. These fees are payable by parents and vary depending on the examination board and the number of subjects taken. Detailed information about these fees will be provided as they become available from the British Council. Invoices and instructions for payment for entries to examinations will be issued by the Examinations Office prior to the sitting of the examinations. BTEC registration fees are due when students have started the courses in Years 10 or 12.

Course Expectations Mathematics is an exciting and enjoyable subject which is essential for our everyday lives. It is the study of the sciences of numbers, quantities, geometry and forms. From a basic level of numeracy needed for buying food or clothes, to being the language used from quantum mechanics to planetary orbit, Mathematics is everywhere. It is a logical and beautiful subject in its own right and also helps us to make sense of the world and gives us the tools to change it. Mathematics is a subject of ‘doing’ rather than ‘knowing’: while practising it we develop skills in problem-solving, reasoning, logic, and self-discipline. At ICS, we strive for every student to reach their potential in Mathematics. We hope that we will encourage and help our students not only to learn more about the wonders of Mathematics but also to gain competence and confidence in everyday life and the future workplace. We treat the subject not as a collection of rules but as an exploration in learning: posing questions, solving real problems and discovering patterns and relationships.
