The texts studied will allow you to build a solid foundation for the skills needed for further study or employment. The tasks completed over the two years will promote your personal development. The aim of the course is to prepare ESL students (English as a Second Language) to use the language in a range of realistic and authentic contexts.

Course Expectations Have an interest in language learning skills across the four strands of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Read consistently to develop a grasp of vocabulary and there is an expectation that students will get involved in class discussions in order to develop their speaking skills. Have a competent grasp of basic English but students need support with communicating in different contexts and with understanding a wider range of texts. The course has been especially designed to support students who have English as a second language and allows students to progress to further education.
Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
Understand factual information and ideas from a range of texts, e.g. leaflets, articles, blogs and web pages Identify relevant information and select correct details from a range of texts. Identify ideas, opinions and attitudes from a range of texts and understand the connections between them. Show some awareness of what is implied but not directly stated, e.g. gist, purpose and intention. Communicate factual information and ideas with appropriate expansion. Select and organise relevant information and ideas into paragraphs and use appropriate linking devices. Respond to a written stimulus and show awareness of appropriate register and style/format for the given purpose and audience, e.g. a summary, an informal email, an article, a report and a review. Produce written texts with an adequate range of language structures (i.e. grammatical and lexical). Produce written texts that show good control of punctuation and spelling.
What will I learn?
In this course, you will have the opportunity to gain lifelong skills and knowledge. This will include: better communicative ability in English, improved ability to understand English in a range of everyday situations and in a variety of social styles and a greater awareness of the nature of language and language-learning skills.
Examination Structure This course is linear where students complete the final examinations at the end of the two year course. The spoken component (paper 3) is an optional extra certification and is completed in class during Year 11.
