IGCSE Art
What will I learn? In this course, you will continue to develop and refine all core artistic skills needed to progress on your artistic journey. You will learn how to make creative decisions based on your own ideas. You will produce work looking at a range of subjects and continue refining your skills in the use of proportion, tone, colour and all the visual elements. You will practice working in different scales using a range of materials and techniques, such as mono print, photography, painting, digital art etc... You will become expert researchers as you explore artists that interest and inspire you as you develop your own style and preferences. You will learn how to evaluate and analyse your own work and that of other artists, you will compare and contrast artworks and look at the contextual values of a range of artworks. You will learn how to make creative decisions about your work and develop final outcomes based on your own personal creative journey.

Course Expectations Students must be passionate about the subject and enjoy being creative, as well as having a willingness to try new things and experiment with materials, media and techniques. Commitment to working outside of school (4 hours of home learning per week minimum) with the option of using the art studio during lunchtimes and after-school CCA’s. Students will be expected to attend at least one after-school GCSE Art Workshop per week. You must be prepared to work independently as the course progresses and make your own creative decisions, leading your own learning journey. A willingness to express yourself both creatively and in writing, expressing your thoughts, opinions and analysing your creative work and that of others.
Examination Structure
The externally-set assignment component will be released on 2nd January each year and can be given to students as soon as it is released.
Centres are free to organise their own preparatory period of study before the start of the 10-hour sustained focus period. The 10-hour sustained focus period under examination conditions may take place over multiple sessions (a maximum of four within three consecutive weeks). Students’ work must comprise preparatory studies and personal response(s).
Preparatory studies will comprise a portfolio of development work based on the externally-set assignment broad-based thematic starting point.
During the 10-hour period of sustained focus under examination conditions, students will work unaided to produce personal response(s), with reference to their preparatory studies, in response to the externally-set assignment broad-based thematic starting point. Students’ work must show evidence of all four Assessment Objectives.
