Course Expectations

What will I learn? intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive capabilities. investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical, and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgment. experience in working with a broad range of media an understanding of the interrelationships between art, craft and design processes and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate. an interest in, enthusiasm for, and enjoyment of art, craft and design. independence of mind in developing, refining and communicating their own ideas, their own intentions, and their own personal outcomes. Time management and final outcome planning.

Minimum GCSE Art grade of Level 6 Students studying art A-Level must be confident and enthusiastic about following their own artistic path. They should be ready to develop ideas that are of personal interest and stretch them to explore a broader area of critical thinking in art. Students are expected to work outside lesson times and a minimum of 6 hours of additional practical work per week should be the norm. Students must work in a broad range of media demonstrating a willingness to explore creative processes to achieve their desired end results. Students will need to demonstrate motivation to visit art galleries and explore other artists work to help drive their own creative journey. Students will be encouraged read around the subject to explore deeper critical thinking and understanding of Art.

Examination Structure Incorporates two major elements: preparatory studies and the 15–hour period of sustained focus.

Preparatory Studies will comprise a portfolio of practical and written development work based on the Externally Set Assignment. During the 15–hour period of sustained focus under examination conditions, students will produce final outcome(s) extending from their preparatory studies in response to the Externally Set Assignment. The Externally Set Assignment is released on 1 February and contains a theme and suggested starting points. Students have from 1 February until the commencement of the final 15–hour period of sustained focus to develop preparatory studies.

The 15–hour period of sustained focus under examination conditions may take place over multiple sessions (a maximum of five, within three consecutive weeks). Work must cover all four assessment objectives.
