PUTTING RECOVERY FIRST Surge’s first client proves recovery is possible

When Surge Recovery opened its doors, Derek Huggins was the rst person to walk through them. As the organization’s rst client, Huggins had struggled for years. He began using drugs socially when he was 18, but what started as fun soon turned to addiction, particularly with PCP. By the time he was ready to commit to recovery, Huggins says his “life was just totally in shambles.” “First it was fun, but after a while it wasn't fun anymore,” Huggins says. “I don't want to die being an addict, I don't want to leave that legacy. I want to leave a positive legacy.” A NEW LEGACY ‡at legacy would now include a new chapter of recovery. After a four-month stay at another treatment program, Huggins came to Surge sober and ready to move forward with his life. Huggins now lives in a Surge residence where he says the camaraderie and fellowship he shares with other clients provides the support system he needs to keep going. 50
