each one richer and fuller than the one before. Hitherto God had pledged Himself only to show the land; now He bound Himself to give it.—F. B. Meyer. 5. Trial-Delayed Answers “ Nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised there by” (Heb. 12:11), God’s dealings with us spiritually are not always on the line of ample supply. There is a place for spiritual barrenness and poverty. The answer to prayer is often long delayed; the trial continues until “ hope deferred maketh the heart sick,” and the world ' asks, “Where is thy God?” It is all part of His way of wisdom and love, and designed, when the an-. swer comes, to make it the more sig nificant and precious because of the trial which delayed it.—A. B. Simpson. Upright Trunks “ The righteous shall flourish like "the palm tree; he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon” (Psa. 92:12). “That they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord” (Isa. 61:3). : We all admire a tree that grows erect. And we all admire a Christian whose life is upright. What causes a tree to grow straight? Often it is its efforts to reach, the sun that brings this about. I f ' growing toward the sun causes a tree to be erect, w ill not looking unto Jesus, our “Sun of right eousness,” cause our lives to be up right?—Fred Hartley Wight.* 7. The Clouds “O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me” (Psa. 43:3). No human life is without some ex perience of clouded skies and stormy days, and sometimes “the clouds re turn after the rain.” It is a blessed experience to recognize the silver lin ing on the darkest storm cloud, and, better still, to be sure of the shining of God’s light behind a sky that seems wholly and hopelessly overcast. —A. T. Pierson. 8. As It Were “They were, as it were, complain- ers” (Num. 11:1, Margin). People who do not dare to sin open ly and unequivocally, but manage to do it “ as it were” only, do not lie straight out, but they evade or equivo cate, or imply enough falsehood to escape real conviction of conscience. They do not openly accuse God of unkindness or unfaithfulness, but they strike at Him through somebody else. They find fault with circum stances and people and things that God has permitted to come into their lives, and “ as it were” murmur. . . •. *Reprinted from Nature ‘ Sermons by special ermission o.f Zondervan Pub. House, Grand apids, Mich. 6.

These, things were written for our warning.-^iA. B, Simpson. ' 9. None Other Name “There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). None other Lamb; none other name: None other hope, in heaven, or earth, or sea; None other hiding-place from guilt and shame— None beside Thee! Lord, Thou art life, though I be dead! Love’s fire Thou art, however cold I be; Nor heaven have I, nor place to lay my head— Nor home, but Thee! —Christina Rossetti. 10. . The One Answer “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with ,all spiritual blessings in the heavenly places ift Christ” (Eph.. 1:3). Do we need a shelter from the sirocco of temptation? We may find it in Jesus. . . I In days of tempest He is the impenetrable covert. In loneli ness He is like the murmur of waters in a dry place. In weariness He is- the shadow of a great rock, beneath which we may sit with great delight. In other words, Jesus Christ is the one answer of the soul t<5 every possible circum stance, to all emergencies, to the de mands and appeals that constantly knock at the door of our life. —F. B. Meyer. 11. The Best Habit “ Study to show thyself Approved unto God, . . . rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15). I have never had a case of spiritual failure to deal with, or spiritual tragedy to investigate, that did pot begin in a neglect of Bible study-and prayer. I have never known a case of radiant spiritual development that was not rooted in a daily habit of the study of God’s Word and daily re course to prayer.—Selected. 12. God's Way “ God commendeth his love toward us” (Rom. 5:8). 8 War conditions have more or less upset us all. .Floods of hatred seem to overwhelm the world . . . we find that our patience .has limits, our love is soon exhausted. . . . And yet the trial goes on. The dally irritation, per- »haps injustice, has to be borne. The iron enters into one’s saul, and there seems no escape. What is to be the outcome? ..... . Is it to be discourage ment, despair of the best, a yielding to fault-finding, criticism, bitterness
