A TALE OF TWO PREACHERS [ Continued, from Page 289] called to the high office of the minis try, yet they' were different. We be lieve this difference to have been in their attitude toward their God,, to ward their study, and hence to them selves, and to their congregations. The congregation w ill soon learn your atti tude, fellow minister, toward the Lord Jesus and your study. These cannot be hid. The other day we were told that this last-mentioned pastor had gone to an other church. We asked our informer ^how this had come to pass. This was *his answer: ‘‘There was no one in the C—*— Church (the one to which he has gone) that knew him.” This leads us to say to every ehureji when contem plating the calling of a new pastor, learn three things about the man be fore you call him. What are his prayer habits, his study habits, and his pas toral habits? And to every minister, the call—and the command—of the Word of God is, “Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fu lfil it.” “ Keep that which is committed to thy trust.” WHEN A PREACHER IS ANGRY | £ Continued, from Page 291] grateful Nabal and all the people of his city. “A soft answer t u r n e t h a w a y wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” It is said that when an ele phant is enraged nothing calms him so well as a little lamb; and it is a well-known fact that Andrew Jackson, in the battle of New Orleans, stopped the cannon balls of the British artil le ry with bales of cotton. Sometimes, as years and difficulties of life increase, the occasions for anger are more frequent. Therefore, the greater is the need that we should earnestly endeavor to conquer anger. The things which provoke, annoy, and irritate, are, after all, God’s ministers; they are elements and factors in our probation. Balaam beat his ass be cause she turned aside and crushed his foot again the wall; but he need not have been angry, for it was the ass’s action which saved Balaam from the avenging sword of the angel. Let us not be angry with adverse circum stances, because, somewhere in the midst of them, although hidden to our view, is the messenger and angel of God. Above all, beware that the anger of the moment is not retained, and does not solidify into hatred; for that is the saddest plight that can befall a human spirit. No wonder the apostle commanded: “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon

your wrath” ! Do not give place to this devil of anger. But resist the devil. You have God’s promise that he w ill flee from you. Let your counselor, your friend, and your example he that One who, when He was reviled, re viled not again; and when He suf fered He threatened not.

KB-8 - Dayton,'Ohio The History of the Brethren By Napoleon Noel Edited by William F, Knapp Providing carefully, organized source material concerning a m o v e m e n t whose influence has beep a blessing far beyond its immediate group of be lievers, this two-volume history of the (so-called Plymouth) Brethren is an important contribution in the field of church history. Bringing to the fore front of Christian thinking many- truths recovered within a period dat ing from about 1826, this movement has powerfully aided the fundamen talism of our present day as regards gospel dispensational, prophetic and church truths. : By the very nature of the manner in which the companies of the Breth ren have conducted their meetings and have maintained contact between various local gatherings, a compre hensive factual statement ■would be difficult to prepare. But in Napoleon Noel the movement has had a proved minister, of the Word whose research into notes and correspondence be tween the brethren gave him a rich supply of materiaL Much of the pres ent record relates to the doctrinal, problems which r e s u l t e d in the various divergences from the position taken by the original “ Primitive Com pany.” Mr. Noel’s work covers the account up to about 1926, and the later editing by W. F. Knapp, adds de tails to 1936. 2 vols. 800 pages. W. F. Knapp, 120 W. Maple Ave.-, Denver, Colo. Cloth. Price $2.00 per set.

’37, and Lucille Falconer, ’40, both of whom received the Bachelor of Arts degree, and by Betty Brown, who re ceived the degree of Bachelor of Sci ence. Miss Falconer plans to give her fu ll time this fa ll to the work of the University of California Bible League, of which V. V. Morgan, ’13, is Director. She expects to do visitation and per sonal work among students on the campus and in dormitories and soror ity houses. Margaret J. Hart, ’38, received the Bachelor of Arts degree from the Uni versity of California at Los Angeles in June. She expects to return to the Uni versity in the fail for graduate work in preparation for teaching. Blending doctrinal discussions with a devotional approach to various as pects of the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, this book presents solid, care ful teaching, in a fragrant and rever ent atmosphere. Because in our rela tion to Christ “it is through consider ing Him that we are led to worship Him,” the author seeks first to focus attention upon the wonderful Person of Christ Himself. From this point, he proceeds to show Him in His relation to the Father and the Holy Spirit, and to set Him forth, as in the Scrip tures, as the Object of worship. A richer experience of the true meaning of worship w ill result from prayerful study of this exposition of worship as set forth in the Word of God. 230 pages. Loizeaux Brothers, New York, N. Y.
