Defense Acquisition Research Journal #109

A Publication of DAU

• Swiftly adopt cutting-edge technologies, in particular AI and cloud computing, to form a more decentralized and resilient “military internet of things.” • Provide real, tangible incentives that promote new blood in the acquisition field. At their root, Brose’s recommendations are simple: we must have the decisiveness to pursue progress despite discomfort. We must believe, in Brose’s words, that “there is something worse than change” (p. 85). While it is not entirely surprising that the Chief Strategy Officer for a defense tech startup would advocate for fast, decisive, and unconstrained empowerment of tech disruptors, Brose’s points ring true (if slightly directed). The Kill Chain is a frank discussion of the high-tech reality of warfare that humanity now faces—a reality that U.S. politicians and military officials have largely failed to preempt. Brose’s (mostly) clear-eyed assessment of our shortcomings and strong recommendations for where we go next make his book a valuable resource for anyone exploring the topics of next-generation warfare and great power competition.
