Mitchel Lincoln Invests In N11 Jumbo From TCY BY DAN BRUNTON

GBP Acquires Land In AZ For Future Box Plant Green Bay, Wisconsin based Green Bay Pack- aging (GBP) announced a land acquisition near Phoenix, Arizona. The approximately 80- acre parcel is located at the NEC/SEC of Bian- co and Kortsen Roads in Casa Grande. “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Green Bay Packaging to Casa Grande,” said Casa Grande Mayor Craig McFarland. “This investment is a testament to our city’s strategic growth and commitment to fostering a vibrant business environment. We look for- ward to a long and prosperous partnership with Green Bay Packaging.” “Green Bay Packaging is excited to be a part of the great community of Casa Grande, Arizona,” said GBP Executive Vice President Bryan Hollenbach. “The surrounding markets are a growing business community that we believe will be a great fit for the future presence of a signifi- cant GBP corrugated box operation. Mitchel Lincoln, the Montreal based corrugated packaging company founded in 1965, has recently completed a successful installation of a state-of-the-art TCY N11 Jumbo casemaker, building on one of the company’s core values to continuously reinvest in cutting-edge tech- nologies. Emmanuel Eydan, Industrial Director, Mitchel Lincoln, says, “We needed to add a machine with the latest technology and capabilities so we could improve our efficiency and productive output at our Jumbo plant to serve our growing heavy duty box customers.

“Mitchel Lincoln is part of the Atlantic Packaging Group and has been running a TCY Jumbo FFG extremely reliably for over 20 years at a sister manufacturing facility. Therefore, we have an already well-prov- en supplier in TCY and so we took the decision to travel to the UK and evaluate a new N11 89″ x 25″ FFG for our plant.” Technical Specs Were Key Once the machine performance had been demonstrated, the tech- nical team at Mitchel Lincoln worked with TCY to study the technical specifications and details to ensure that the N11 jumbo could meet the needs of converting extremely heavy-duty AAC and AAA 1,100-pound sheet all in one converting line, as well as creating bespoke layouts to fit into the pre-determined floorspace. Eydan notes, “It was critical that the machine could run these heavy CONTINUED ON PAGE 28 Mitchel Lincoln aims to improve productivity with a new Jumbo FFG by TCY.

Make a stronger, lighter and more sustainable corrugated blank using less glue by implementing a “brick” style pattern developed by Baumer hhs. This pattern creates a stronger bond using less glue. Our new all-electric PX 1000 applicators with over a billion cycle life can easily apply the pattern with clean cutoff and accurate placement. The PGD 1000 sensor is there to show your customer that every box was properly glued so you’ll never end up on some gag reel. You can be the star with The CorrBox solution from Baumer hhs.

PX 1000 Cold Glue Applicator • Extremely fast and powerful closing force means no drips or tailing so your first box is a good box. • Strong armature activation easily handles viscosity fluctuations and will work with a large variety of adhesives. • Fast action coil means you can now stitch your beads at higher running speeds lowering adhesive consumption up to 70% and improving board output.

PGD 1000 Monitoring Sensor • Measure the glue proximity to the edge of the tab and avoid squeeze-out so you deliver an accurately glued box every time. • The printing on the carton does not effect the hybrid sensor’s ability to read the bead. Black, white, plaid or polka dot, the sensor is not bothered, so neither are you. • No UV additives needed for detection saves you money, time and effort.

E-Commerce Packaging To Grow 10 Percent Annually The E-Commerce Packaging Market is pro- jected to grow from $77.4 billion in 2024 to $124.9 billion by 2029, at a compound annual growth rate of 10 percent, accord- ing to a global forecast released by Mar- ketsandMarkets.com . Packaging materials in the report in- clude corrugated boards, paper and pa- perboards serving the electronics, food and beverage, fashion and cosmetics in- dustries. The growth of e-commerce packaging is driven by several factors, such as the easy availability of the internet and smart- phones, growing sales in the e-commerce industry, and technological advancements. However, the lack of proper recycling in- frastructure is a major restarting factor in the market, the report said. Moreover, the emergence of social media platforms comes out to be one of the opportunities for e-commerce packaging solutions man- ufacturers. Paper and paperboards held the sec- ond-largest share in the market of e-com- merce packaging in 2023. The electronics segment held the largest share of the mar- ket of e-commerce packaging. The high value of electronic products makes them most profitable to sell, but their excessive fragility demands innovative packaging solutions to hold electronic products firm- ly in place while also preventing bumps, knocks, and drops during shipment.

Thinkink Packaging Launches Biodegradable CBD Packaging

Scranton, Pennsylvania based Thinkink Packaging an- nounced the launch of its new line of biodegradable pack- aging specifically designed for the CBD market. Traditional packaging materials have long been a con- cern for environmental advocates as many are derived from non-renewable resources and contribute to pollution. Recognizing the need for a more sustainable solution, Thinkink Packaging said it has developed biodegradable packaging that meets the unique requirements of the CBD industry. These new packaging options are made from plant-based materials, ensuring that they break down nat- urally over time, reducing the environmental impact. “Our planet’s health is directly tied to the choices we make in business,” says Asim Dastgheer, CEO of Thinkink Packaging. “The packaging industry has a responsibility to innovate and provide solutions that lessen our carbon footprint. With our new biodegradable line, we aim to set a new standard in sustainable packaging for the CBD mar- ket, offering products that are not only eco-friendly but also maintain the quality and integrity of the products they encase.” Thinkink Packaging said it hopes to inspire other com- panies in the packaging sector to adopt more sustainable practices to help create a more eco-conscious industry.

PRINTCHEK REPRESENTS A NEW FRONTIER IN PRINT QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR THE CORRUGATED CARDBOARD INDUSTRY PrintChek uses a series of line scan cameras to capture an image of each sheet across its entire span before being die-cut. Every sheet's size, rotation, and print quality are then compared to your set “golden standard” to identify defects as small as 2mm like skew, spots, hickeys, smears, color deviation, missing print, and more. Using PrintChek in conjunction with MeasurementChek allows you to remotely monitor production and quality statistics which you can then export via Excel for statistical analysis.

PPA Reveals 2024 Student Design Challenge Finalists

across the country get to exercise their creativity and ap- ply their knowledge of sustainable design at the same time,” said Heidi Brock, AF&PA CEO. “Each year, we are impressed by every submission from the next generation of sustainability leaders. The challenge also gives participants real-world experience. Many Student Design Challenge participants have pur- sued careers in packaging design.” The winner will be announced at the PPC’s Fall Meet- ing & Leadership Conference set for September 30 to Oc- tober 2 in Atlanta, Georgia. Each team will present their designs and showcase their prototype to current industry professionals, ultimately supporting the goal of engaging the next generation. One of this year’s judges, Kelly Fellner, is a former Stu- dent Design Challenge winner who now works full-time in packaging design. “The Student Design Challenge serves as a launching pad for students who see that the paperboard packaging industry has a bright future,” said Ben Markens, President of PPC. “It not only showcases the creativity of aspiring designers, but the inherent sustainability of paper-based packaging. We’re looking forward to learning about all of the finalists’ exciting designs in Atlanta this fall.” PPA's mission is to promote the benefits of paperboard packaging to influence preference for these materials in packaging design and selection. For more information visit, paperboardpackaging.org .

The Paperboard Packaging Alliance (PPA) announced the finalists of its 2024 Student Design Challenge, an annual competition in which university students apply their talent and design skills to innovate, creative approaches to pa- per-based packaging in response to real-world customer needs and marketing scenarios. PPA is a joint initiative between the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) and the Paperboard Packaging Council. This year’s Design Challenge tasked students with cre- ating sustainable paperboard packaging for an original fresh produce product that is typically not packaged in pa- per-based packaging. Additionally, the package had to be stackable. Students were judged on prototype, design elements, marketing plan, final video of the design, and permission from the brand, if applicable. Student design projects from the following schools were named as finalists: • Grovey Garlic – Rochester Institute of Technology • Lively Roots – California State Polytechnic University • SPUDS Potatoes – Pennsylvania College of Art and De- sign “Through the Student Design Challenge, students all

board grades for our Agricultural, Food & Beverage and industrial packaging customers and I was particularly im- pressed by the sturdy construction of the folder gluer sec- tion and the engineering principles applied to the main press section that we knew would provide stable and ac- curate production performance. The option of inline stitch- ing would significantly reduce material handling and so we selected a TCY N11 86″ x 205″ two-color jumbo casemak- er with rotary die cutter, inline stitching unit and counter down stacker. We also added a Jumbo pre-feeder and tied the whole line into our plant conveyor lines.” This complete all-in-one casemaker is equipped with TCY Smart Tech full computer system, where the orders need only be programmed once to the memory, and then the next time that the order is recalled the N11 will auto- matically and accurately set the axis positions from the last production run allowing for faster operator setups. The system also has pin-point error reporting and scheduled maintenance alerts that can be controlled by maintenance supervisors as well as remote diagnostic support capabil- ities. Eydan continues, “The installation was spatially chal- lenging in terms ofworking around the other production lines but by working together and understanding the de- tail of what was required, the installation and commission- ing was successfully completed in early 2024.”
