Pool bylaw gets reworked

Mystery car fire

THE NATION | Police have a curious arson case. Fire fighters fromThe Nation municipality and the OPP answered a Wednesday eve- ning call May 8 about a fire in the Larose Forest. The call came from one of the homeown- ers in the small residential portion of the community forest near the intersection of Bertrand and Martel Roads. The source of the fire was a Mitsubishi Lancer that had been abandoned and set ablaze. Police are trying to recover the VIN num- ber to determine if the car was stolen.

taining private pools, the main focus of the current review concerns making sure that pools with deck additions meet provincial building code standards along with safety concerns like having any outside electrical outlet meet the Ontario electrical code. The revised bylaw will include a ban on the addition of diving boards or water slides for above-ground outdoor pools. An in- ground pool may have a low diving board or small slide attachment but only if the pool is deep enough and large enough to accommodate such an addition within ac- cept safety standards. During question period on the revised by-

law there was just the one inquiry about the section regulating wastewater emptying of private pools into a municipal sewer outlet. The concern was that pool owners should be limited to using a garden hose rather than a large drainage pipe to empty pools and that the hose should run from the pool out to the front of the house and directly into a sewer outlet. This avoids the chance of flood damage to neighbouring yards and homes from a backyard pool. Final revisions to the bylaw will be pre- sented to council for approval at an upcom- ing session.

Revisions to the current pool bylaw were the first item on the list for the bylaw advi- sory committee’s May 8 public information session. The last review of the bylaw was in 2007 and, besides adjusting the current permit fee system for installing and main-

A 44-year-old Québec man, owner and representative for A1 Promotions was ar- rested and charged with fraud following OPP investigation of several complaints from businesses in the Five Counties region. The investigation continues as police have received other complaints against the company since the arrest. Any business owner or other individual whomay have had dealings with A1 Promo- tions is asked to contact the OPP Hawkes- bury detachment at 613-632-2729 . Beware and be wary about email alerts about Internet service. The OPP have begun receiving com- plaints about a possible scam with the con artist using the name of a national phone company to the suspicions of potential vic- tims. Targets of the scam receive email alerts that they have missed making payments for their phone and/or Internet service and they need to act fast to ensure continued uninterrupted service. The scammer then asks for credit card in- formation sent back by return email. Police warn residents not to give out any personal information over the phone or the Internet without first checking to make sure the business query is legitimate. $+*!ŏ/)
