AWA Reports On Sustainability AWA Alexander Watson Associates has published its first Sustainability Report on Label and Product Dec- oration Market investigating the global landscape of sustainability within the labeling industry. As the label volumes continue to grow year on year, its growth prospects continue to become in- creasingly influenced by increasing consumer pressure regarding en- vironmental concerns, legislation, and industry guidelines for all lev- els of global value chains. The newly published report in- vestigates the global landscape of sustainability within the labeling industry, including breakdowns of popular labeling methods and as- sessments of the current landscape. awareness and expectations around packaging are rising, and where climate change is becoming a major concern, FEFCO is now presenting the corrugated cardboard sector’s plan to achieve climate neutrality by the year 2050. This work responds to the EU Green Deal goal to cut green- house gas emissions by 80 to 95 percent by 2050. Building on past achievements and analytical work, the roadmap describes how the corrugated cardboard sector is

its fossil emissions, the corrugated cardboard sector would become a climate negative packaging material. The ambitions of the corrugated cardboard sector’s Climate Neutrality Roadmap can only be achieved if the following enabling conditions are met: • A predictable and stable regulatory framework to steer investments. • The availability and affordability of climate friendly energy carriers. • An adequate and robust energy infrastructure. • Policies and measures to enable the decarbonisa- tion of the paper sector. • Policies and measures to enable the decarbonisa- tion of the transport sector. • Recycling policies to improve quality of waste streams. “The roadmap reflects a credible plan that can be implemented in the required timeframe,” said Alex Manisty, Chairman of the FEFCO Climate Neutral- ity Roadmap Steering Committee, “and shows the strong will of the industry to build a climate neutral future for corrugated cardboard. Already the most recycled packaging material, with 88 percent recy- cled content, climate neutral corrugated cardboard will enable sustainable global supply chains for the long term.”
committed to achieving climate neutrality. It lays out key milestones, the most plausible scenarios, the required investments, and the necessary policy measures to reach this goal. The key findings show that the corrugated card- board industry can reduce its carbon footprint emis- sions through actions directly within its control by 2050 compared to business as usual (BAU): • Improvements in material efficiency and circular- ity that would reduce the footprint by 3.3 Mt CO2eq (or 19 percent) by 2050 compared to BAU; and • Further improvements in energy efficiency and decarbonization of the energy mix would reduce the footprint by an additional 2.8 Mt CO2eq (or 16 percent) by 2050 compared to BAU. Looking beyond direct action, collective engage- ment of the wider value chain will enable corrugat- ed cardboard to become carbon neutral and even carbon negative. Notably, the bulk of the reductions must be achieved upstream, and, in particular, by reducing the climate footprint of paper production. Reduction of the paper sector (fossil) carbon foot- print by 80 percent by 2050 (in line with the current paper industry roadmap) will allow the corrugated cardboard sector to achieve climate neutrality. Furthermore, if the paper sector fully phases out

Macro trends are significant to understand the current and future landscape of sustainability in la- beling; the report identifies and discusses different aspects, such as policy and regulation, design for recycling, consumer trends, brand initiatives and packaging megatrends. AWA also gives a comprehensive overview of dif- ferent projects run by associations and other or- ganizations with different geographical scopes and parts of the value chain. S-One Named To Inc.’s 2022 Best in Business List S-One Labels and Packaging has been named an honoree of the Inc. 2022 Best in Business list in the Sustainability category. Inc.’s Best in Business Awards honor companies that have made an ex- traordinary impact in their fields and on society. A panel of editorial judges chose S-One for its positive impact on customers, community, industry, environment, and society. According to the World Economic Forum, plastic packaging has become a global issue, with projec- tions of our oceans containing more plastic than fish by the year 2050. S-One Holdings is committed to helping the label and packaging industry by designing and develop- ing sustainable flexible packaging containing re- newable materials that, when they reach their end of life, can be composted, and returned to the earth. In August of this year, S-OneLP received the Lomi Approved designation for a selection of ReEarth compostable films. The ReEarth line of prelami- nated flexible packaging films are designed using bio-based and compostable components. Lomi Ap- proved is a certification for non-food compostable items, including bioplastics, which can be broken down by Lomi, so they can biodegrade faster and ultimately turn into dirt. Also this year, S-One launched its mentorship partnership with State College of Florida (SCF), Manatee-Sarasota, in developing local IT talent to meet the demand from area businesses.

Earlier this year, Amcor launched a product re- brand including its new EcoGuard brand, which the company said makes it easier for customers to choose from a number of more sustainable solu- tions, including products that reduce the carbon footprint of packaging, are designed to be recycled and use recycled content or biomaterials. ID Images Acquires Summit Labels, Precision Label ID Images (IDI), a portfolio company of Sole Source Capital LLC, has acquired Summit Labels and Precision Label in separate transactions. The acquisitions bring the total number of add- on investments for IDI to seven since becoming a Sole Source Capital portfolio company in August 2021, with the company’s most recent acquisition of Hickman Label announced last month. Terms of the transactions were not disclosed. Jointly-owned Vancouver, Canada-based Summit Labels and Cal- gary, Canada-based Precision Labels are both man- ufacturers of prime labels for the food & beverage, industrial, and nutraceutical end markets.
Australian packaging solution producer Amcor, with U.S. headquarters in Deerfield, Illinois, has inked a five-year deal with Irving, Texas-based ExxonMobil to purchase certified-circular polyeth- ylene (PE) in support of its target to achieve 30-per- cent-recycled material across its portfolio by 2030. Amcor said the volume of material will increase incrementally each year and is expected to reach 100,000 metric tons annually at the end of the con- tract period. Leveraging Material Through ExxonMobil’s Exxtend technology for advanced recycling, Amcor intends to leverage this material across its global portfolio, with a particular focus on the healthcare and food industries, which are required to meet stringent safety requirements for recycled plastic. The company said the agreement will expand on its initial purchase of certified-circular PE material from ExxonMobil earlier this year. Amcor said the certified-circular PE material will be sourced from ExxonMobil’s facility in Baytown, Texas, which, upon startup later this year, have a

Mars Wrigley Transitions With Amcor’s AmFiber Amcor, a global developer and producer of pack- aging solutions, partnered with Mars Wrigley Aus- tralia to transition its Mars, Snickers and Milky Way chocolate bars to Amcor’s AmFiber Performance Paper packaging. The new recyclable paper-based packaging, made from sustainably sourced paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, is lo- cally manufactured and can be printed with either flexographic or gravure technology and finished with a heat- or cold-seal adhesive. Mars Wrigley’s new paper packaging will be avail- able in Australian supermarkets and convenience stores from April 2023 and will have the ability to be recycled using traditional curbside recycling bins. In addition to the new packaging being more sustainable, Amcor tailored the solution to pro- cess efficiently along Mars Wrigley’s lines, help- ing the brand to meet Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets by eliminating more than 360 tons of plastic from Mars Wrigley’ production chain, once fully transitioned.
Siegwerk, a provider of printing inks and coatings for packaging applications and labels, has signed the commitment letter for the Science Based Tar- gets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi calls on companies to demonstrate their commitments to mitigating climate change by pub- licly pledging to reduce their greenhouse gas emis- sions with science-based targets. A target is consid- ered science-based if it is in line with the level of decarbonization required to keep the global tem- perature increase below 1.5°C compared with pre- industrial levels. The Science Based Targets initiative is a collabora- tion between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF). It has already signed up more than 4000 companies. Siegwerk is committed to setting science-based targets as well as net-zero targets, including a long- term science-based target. The company is expect- ing to submit these targets to the SBTi in the first half of 2023. In doing so, Siegwerk will be part of the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign and the Race to Zero campaign, aiming to reduce emissions

Scentisphere Explores Scent In packaging In order to explore the benefits of scented labels and packaging, Scentisphere engaged the analytic firm MAi Research to quantify its claims. The main objective of the study was to measure the impact of the presence/absence of scratch-and-sniff on pur- chase interest and company imagery. One thousand consumers, mainly those responsible for household buying, were polled. The study delivered a host of key findings. For example, a majority of consumers (56 percent) are more likely to purchase a fragranced product with a scented label. Additionally, at least half of con- sumers at large desire scratch-and-sniff on body washes, liquid soaps, deodorants and laundry care products. The demographic profile of those most interested in scented labels is a millennial with children at home, employed, and/or living in an urban area. A major selling point for scent on packaging is that companies that offer scent sampling are signifi- cantly more likely to be considered innovative and caring than those that do not, the statistics show. The inclusion of scent on packaging ensures that the package is not tampered with, i.e. not opened to sample the fragrance as the fragrance is on the package.
